As a free-diver descends, pressure increases and the lungs shrink.
At around 10m, their volume is already reduced by about half.

If a free-diver takes a breath from a scuba diver at depth and then ascends,
the air expands as pressure drops — putting dangerous stress on the lungs.

❌ Possible consequences:
— lung overexpansion
— arterial gas embolism

That’s why breathing compressed air underwater is strictly off-limits for freedivers

This is also the reason why:

Freedivers can dive deep without decompression stops

Scuba divers, however, require them — because breathing compressed air leads to gas absorption in the body
