from shows a neat way to stack the ropes on a multipitch climb. This method is helpful when there isn’t an option to stack the rope on a ledge.

👉Top tips:

- If you can run the rope through a quickdraw when taking in the slack to the second, it saves a bit of energy and makes it easier to stack neatly.

- Make each loop that you stack a touch shorter than the last. This makes it less likely to tangle when you’re belaying the lead climber later.

- When belaying the lead climber, the stacked loop will get shorter, either nudge more slack over from the loops in the opposite side, or swap break hands to the other side. Do this at opportune moments like when the leader is resting.

The Ritual.

Every climb starts the same way. Not at the base of the wall, not when your hands meet the rock. It starts before that, fingers working rope into a knot you've tied a thousand times, gear checked and rechecked, a quiet conversation between two people who've agreed to trust each other completely.
