It's time to cover some cam-placement basics.

With Tom kicking off a multi-pitch route, Alice, a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI) and AMI Member is there to coach him through some improvements to his cam placements. There's plenty more to learn about cams, and how to place them safely, but here are a few really useful tips!

As always, we strongly recommend getting hands-on instruction from a qualified instructor or an experienced, competent climber, and practising thoroughly in a safe, controlled environment.

Trad Talks Continue - How to Belay with Half Ropes.

Erin is getting ready to belay Tom, who is about to lead a multipitch trad climb at the crag, using half ropes. Alice, a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI), is on hand to teach Erin how to belay using half ropes on the route they’re about to climb.

Before using a new technique we strongly recommend seeking hands-on instruction from a qualified instructor or a competent climber, and practising thoroughly in a safe, controlled environment before heading out on route. Whatever your experience level, always carry out a thorough buddy check with your partner to confirm the whole system is correctly set up before anyone leaves the ground.

When climbing multi-pitch routes, efficient rope management becomes increasingly important, especially when setting up and belaying from a hanging stance.

Introducing Trad Talks🧗

We're going back to basics! Trad Talks is a new video series covering the key fundamentals we think every climber should know.

Over the series we'll dig into route finding and reading guidebooks, gear placements (and how to tell a good one from a bad one), the different styles of belaying, and everything you need to know about quickdraws, carabiners, and slings.

Join us as we follow Alice, a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI) and member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) and Tom through a full day of climbing, the problems they run into, and how they work through them together. We're kicking things off with Alice guiding Tom through route finding and reading a guidebook: how to choose a route that matches your skill level, recognise when a route isn't the right call, identify a solid anchor point, and spot potential gear placements and anchor-building opportunities along the way, as well as understanding the descent before you commit.

What does it take to become one of the UK’s most accomplished rock climbers?

Emma Twyford's climbing career spans three decades, boasting incredible achievements across trad, sport and bouldering. Emma has flashed trad routes up to E8 and headpointed up to E10, including her ascent of Yma O Hyd (E10, 7a). In September 2019, she became the first British woman to climb 9a with her ascent of The Big Bang at Lower Pen Trwyn in North Wales.

These extraordinary efforts come with mental pressure to perform. When asked how she deals with this, Emma told us: “I’m always making sure I count the small wins and checking in with myself to see if I'm still enjoying the process”.

Emma went on to explain, “Being relaxed about it makes me perform better. It means I perform when I want to.”
