Tomorrow is my last day working up here in Kendal. It's been so nice to be back up in the north west again; evoking fond memories of the three years I spent living up this way.

I've got so many people to thank. .physio for his unbelievable hospitality. for keeping me company in the quiet evenings. And of course for the invitation in the first place, not to mention all of their staff as participants on each course.

Typically I'd be sharing pictures of the course and no doubt I will in time; the usual thing really. But they didn't seem right for this post. No, the natural beauty of a Lakeland hillside seemed far better. Pure Cumbrian rock, lush green hillsides, fine unique clouds, as individual and magical as all those mentioned here.

I truly believe in the training I provide to indoor climbing coaches. To pass on knowledge to those who can teach the next generation. To provide them with the principles and frameworks to train any and everyone, anywhere, indoors or out. And all the while, this photo reminds me of that other side, the natural, the outdoors. The place that drove my passion way back when I started, all those decades ago, right here.

Great day today running a Teaching Outdoor Bouldering workshop in the Dyffryn Ogwen Valley with and along for the ride. Lots of nuance to pad placements, the way we view risk and of course, some quality bouldering, across two great venues no less!

And personally, after we'd called time, I resumption of hostilities with Sway On 8a and a little reminder that I might actually need to do some training... Still, the first step is to try and after a few years away, nice to have that reminder.

I was down in Bristol yesterday for a flying visit to attend a climbing psychology CPD workshop run by and absolutely stacked full of information. I like to think I'm reasonably well read in this field but wow, it's going to take me a good few weeks to get my head around so much excellent theory!

I'd like to offer a massive thanks to for the day. As long as there are experts like Kat who are passionate in helping those around them, the future will continue to look bright

Point of note for the instructors in the audience: not all work is paid.

I've stopped off for a scouting mission at Carreg yr Ogof, near Llyn Trawsfynydd in South Snowdonia today to check feasibility for a venture I have with a friend in the pipeline. Honestly, I wasn't really up for climbing but I needed to know:

▪️ What's the approach and where does it go?
▪️ what are the landings like? Are they suitable for the group?
▪️ What are the climbs like?
▪️ How fast does it dry here and what's the aspect like?

Sure you can read about things in advance and get information from others and I'm certainly not saying I'd never visit a venue for the first time with a client. But nothing beats checking out places in advance.

There is SO MUCH WORK that happens in the background, you wouldn't believe. And while yes I did have a good session in the end, it took me a long time to get going and I would've rather been elsewhere when I was being battered by the wind at the start.

FOR THE CLIENTS AMONG YOU, you can take this as a sign that, chances are, any session with me has been thoroughly checked out before we get there.

I'm coming to Kendal!

It's such a nice thought, given Kendal wall - or as they are now known - was one of the first regular walls I frequented, way back in my student days over 20 years ago.

And now I'm coming back! We've got:

▫ FUNdamentals 3 on Saturday 30th May
▫ Physical Training 1 on Sunday 31st May
▫ BMC Coaching Children on Monday 1st June

A variety of topics over these three days, including dynamic movement and advanced techniques, basics of physical training and both theory and practical sessions on running coaching climbing sessions with children.

Each day is £100 for BMC members or £120 for non-members

One of my favourite topics, this one: Goodhart's Law states that when a metric becomes a target, it ceases to be a good metric.

So when you're measuring your climbing progress through climbing your way through the grades? That's a measure of your improvement. Turn one grade into a target? It's no longer measuring your improvement.

Now the one thing I didn't say in the video, which is very important, is that IT'S OKAY TO USE METRICS AS TARGETS. I'm not saying you can't. What I AM saying is not to conflate the two. If you do - with physical training such as weighted deadhangs for example - it can actually HINDER progress by distracting you from that which you were trying to achieve in the first place.

I actually recorded this on Monday afternoon but didn't get to finishing and publishing until Tuesday evening but the point still stands.

It wasn't that long ago that it would've been seen as sacrilege to go climbing indoors when outside was an available option but that is exactly what I did. And I was not alone. Granted, you'd be hard pressed to call it busy but there were several of us, all outdoor climbers, who had made the conscious choice to go to the wall/gym instead.

In many ways, it's a demonstration of progress for climbing as there are many different reasons why someone might prefer this as an option.

I've dug in to some of the more pertinent ones on the latest article on the Resource Centre (link in bio), coining a new term in the process: Crag Guilt, or the feeling you get climbing inside when you could've gone outdoors instead.

It's a common feeling that we really should be challenging. Because climbing is climbing, it almost doesn't matter where we are. And sometimes, it's a case of taking the convenient option now to have a better experience or build to something bigger later.

Some musings during yesterday's bouldering session in the pass as I went to try and finally finish off what is possibly the hardest 7b I've ever completed: Northern Soul sds.

I'm kind of impressed at myself that I was able to actually talk through this one while walking up the side of the mountain...

Play time! Playing a game with an old client on the Kilter Board today at and having a great time!

In truth, I wanted to test out the exercise but I did have heaps of fun. Were my dyno's particularly good? Not really and with more time, I'd refine and improve them.

But there's something to be said for learning through exploration and play. It can be incredibly effective; shown wonderfully by the number of people who, having seen the obscure arrangement we left up, said 'oo! That sounds good! I'll try that!'

Of course, if dynamic movement isn't your thing and you'd like to improve, please get in touch. I'm normally much better than this. Honest
