Liverpool HEMA

Liverpool HEMA Based in Liverpool, we study medieval and renaissance fencing with the German longsword. “Liverpool HEMA” is a martial arts club based in Liverpool.

We study HEMA, which is short for “historical European martial arts”, also known as historical fencing. We study textbooks written by medieval and renaissance fencing masters, who wrote their instructions for fighting with the different weapons of the day. These books survive in libraries and museums around the world. We study these books and train the fighting systems as modern martial arts, with

modern (safe) training swords and protective gear such as fencing masks and padded gloves. Our area of study will be the 15th and 16th century German longsword. Initially, we will focus on the “common fencing” of the 16th century, to teach important and fundamental swordfighting skills; later, we will progress to the more complicated and sophisticated 15th century longsword fencing according to Johannes Liechtenauer.

On Saturday the 18th of July, we are running our July Fechtschule!

We have invited Melissa Hainsworth to teach a longsword lesson at the event. She has sent us the following description for the session:

-----

Longsword workshop: dealing with larger, stronger opponents

I'm 5ft 5 and most of my opponents are bigger, stronger and taller than me, so I have some experience with dealing with that.

In this workshop we will examine the things you need to focus on, and how you should adapt your fencing if your opponent is stronger or taller than you, and how to deal if they're really aggressive.

I'll be sharing details on both how to approach the fight, i.e. mindset and strategy, as well as some specific techniques you can apply which I find work.

-----

Melissa started fighting with swords doing Historical Re-enactment. When living in Italy, she transitioned to HEMA and joined the La Compania del Arma della Rosa e Spada and upon returning to Britain she and her husband Jordan opened the Academy of Steel.

Melissa is an instructor within the Academy of Steel which has grown to be the largest HEMA School in Wales and one of the largest in Britain. She is part of the team that organises and runs The Gathering of Wolves and Wolf Hunt events which run each year.

Melissa has taken part in a number of tournaments across Europe, bringing home prizes and medals in longsword, sword and buckler, sabre and rapier. Despite her focus being on fencing as a Martial Art rather than a sport, she is one of the highest rated female fencers in Britain. Her aim when competing is to prove that martial fencing is applicable to tournaments and if applied you can win even if you're smaller or weaker than your opponent.

She has been invited to teach at a number of HEMA events and schools in Europe and USA as a guest instructor. She is well versed in a variety of systems, favouring the writings of medieval and early renaissance Italian masters with a little German thrown into the mix.

Last night we looked at the circle-fencing by Balthasaro Cramonio Pomerano.

If you are interested in looking into it a bit further, here is the translation that we were using:

And here is the article on the Wiktenauer with more information about the author and the source:

This is my current translation of the circle-fencing treatise of the 16th century Polish fencing master Balthasaro Cramonio Pomerano.

What is the club uniform?

Black trousers and a blue top. It doesn't have to be a specific shade of blue, it doesn't have to be a particular brand or type of trousers or shirt, but the club colours are black trousers and a blue top!

If you would like a club t-shirt, however, we have some available through our website. If you purchase one, your order will go straight to the printer, and the item will be posted directly to you once they have finished printing it, usually within two or three days.

We also have 1 x S and 1 x M t-shirts left in stock - just send us a message or talk to Keith if you would like to buy one of these without having to deal with postage!

This t-shirt feels soft and lightweight, with the right amount of stretch. It is comfortable and flattering for both men and women.
