Liverpool HEMA

Liverpool HEMA Based in Liverpool, we study medieval and renaissance fencing with the German longsword. “Liverpool HEMA” is a martial arts club based in Liverpool.

We study HEMA, which is short for “historical European martial arts”, also known as historical fencing. We study textbooks written by medieval and renaissance fencing masters, who wrote their instructions for fighting with the different weapons of the day. These books survive in libraries and museums around the world. We study these books and train the fighting systems as modern martial arts, with

modern (safe) training swords and protective gear such as fencing masks and padded gloves. Our area of study will be the 15th and 16th century German longsword. Initially, we will focus on the “common fencing” of the 16th century, to teach important and fundamental swordfighting skills; later, we will progress to the more complicated and sophisticated 15th century longsword fencing according to Johannes Liechtenauer.

Club hoodie

Available in navy blue and also maroon, a club hoodie might be a good investment as we start heading towards the end of summer and then a (hopefully) cooler autumn.

Everyone needs a go-to, cozy sweatshirt to curl up in, so why not have one that is soft, smooth, and stylish?

For a change of pace, I'll bring some source material, and it will be up to YOU to do some of the interpretation :)

Why is this important? HEMA is based on historical source material - I don't just make it up myself.

Some of this source material is easy enough to understand, some of it is painfully cryptic, and most of it is somewhere between. But becoming able to understand how these things are written and what any given passage might mean is a very a skill. And without practice, skills don't improve!

So we'll look at some source material and you'll have some opportunity to try to work out what it is suggesting that we do.

Liverpool HEMA is a martial arts club, studying historical European martial arts and historical fencing. A great way to learn real sword fighting!

The venue had not been told about this until I asked them about it over the weekend, and they came back to me today sounding quite surprised (and a bit miffed) to confirm that the roads will indeed be closed on these dates.

So it looks like we have two weeks off from our regular sessions. The schedule for the next few weeks is as follows:

July
- Wed 22: cancelled due to roadworks
- [FightCamp]
- Wed 29: cancelled due to roadworks

Aug
- Wed 5: should be running as normal
- Wed 12: should be running as normal
- Sat 15: sparring day, should be running as normal
- Wed 19: should be running as normal
- Wed 26: should be running as normal

If you would like to do something to stay in motion during the next two weeks of cancellations, then there are a couple of options:

- you would be welcome to come along to try out karate on a Tuesday evening instead, if you can travel over to the West Derby area www.liverpoolkarate.uk

- you could try training solo at home using one of the online courses on the Academy of Historical Arts website www.academyofhistoricalarts.co.uk/courses/
