‘BOXING NEWS has received a message from Mexico that unbeaten World bantamweight champion Ruben Olivares is considering a return fight with Alan Rudkin, holder of the British and Commonwealth crowns.

If the contest takes place it will be held at the Empire Pool and Sports Arena, Wembley, probably in September or October.

Harry Levene, who has the exclusive rights to promote at Wembley, was not available for confirmation. He was in Spain trying to lure Jose Urtain over here to defend his European heavyweight title against Henry Cooper.

His matchmaker, Mickey Duff, is in the USA.

Olivares knocked out Rudkin in two rounds last December. But that was in Los Angeles, where everything was against Rudkin.

He was not allowed to train normally, Olivares’ jeering Mexican compatriots swarming into his gymnasium at every training session.

Despite the easy manner of Olivares’ December victory, it could be a very different story with Rudkin fighting at home.

One big snag remains. Can Levene pay the sensational Olivares, who is such a little loudmouth he can be cockier than Clay? Ruben’s fight with Lionel Rose is reported to have grossed 358,145 dollars.’

Rudkin Beats Mexican Gonzales In Thriller

‘Referee Bill White must have had one of the easiest jobs of his career controlling a fine all-action bout in which British and Empire bantamweight champion Alan Rudkin, Liverpool, clearly outpointed Mexican Felipe Gonzales over ten fast rounds.

The ‘third man’ was only necessary to jot up the marks at the end of each round, and at the end of it all he applauded with the rest of the large crowd and shook hands with both boxers. Rarely have we seen such a hard-fought contest boxed in such a sporting spirit.’
