‘The best fighter I ever fought was Ruben Olivares, the Mexican world bantamweight champion, in Los Angeles. Up to the time I fought him he’d had 60 fights and won 58 by knockout, so he was definitely the best ‘fighter’.

The best ‘boxer’ was Walter McGowan. When he got moving, he was brilliant.’

“We had been invited to a Mayor’s dance and before we went, Alan decided to phone the Mayor. He got through to the town hall and in a broad Scouse accent asked the girl ‘Is the Mayor there?’

She thought he’d said ‘There’s a murder!’ And she screamed and hung up on him.”

‘Al got his nose broken when we were both amateurs and the doctor told him not to bother getting it fixed because it would only get broken again.
After we turned professional we were sparring in the gym when I landed a right, smack on the nose.
When the swelling went down it was straight again.
He came rushing to me and thanked me for giving him his good looks back.’
