Where were John Mitchels this weekend?
Everywhere!

The summer break is over and the Mitchel’s underage is back!

Our u-17s were representing Lancashire in the inter-county games today in Lancashire’s brand new pitch at Broughton Park against Hertfordshire. The lads can look back in years to come and say they were the very first boys to play on the pitch in a competitive game. Comhghairdeas go Jamie Cunningham, Frank Shovlin, Liam Parr agus Matthew Fardelin.

We put two U9s teams out today in Leeds and they played brilliantly. Even since the summer, the kids have returned and there is a step-change in their play. We played teams from Leicester, Huddersfield, Leeds and Glasgow and the atmosphere and facilities were fantastic. The kids were cheered on to the field by the crowd as their names were called by the announcer. A brilliant day all round. There was also l a special duo who represented us today up there today in the girls. Hughie ‘Beag’ Cunningham, brother of our own Conal ‘beags’, was there with his daughter Evie (far left )who are based in Durham. The girls won the shield up there! Well done to them!

Meanwhile, our under 7s were up in Old Bedians at a blitz! They played great today in Manchester at a well organised event. Considering they haven't played for a few months and this was there first run out since before the summer holidays, They where more than capable for their rivals and done the club proud. A wee visit to Mcdonalds helped! They only got home there…… at 7:42pm. Well done to all our coaches!

Drew was at home today at Greenbank with the underage girls.

We are grateful for such wonderful volunteers amongst us.

Northern League

This weekend sees the start of the Northern League involving ourselves, St. Brendan’s, Dunedin Connollys and Glasgow Gaels.

We are up in Manchester for the first game on Saturday.

After these three games, comes the Senior Championship in October which involves ourselves, Brendan’s again and South Manchester Gaels (a mixture of Lawrence’s and Peter’s).

John Mitchel’s are supporting the Everton in the Community Sleepout for 2026.

The programme supports young people who are at risk of homelessness by providing a safe foundation and support to help them rebuild their lives.

From housing and financial, to mental health support and advocacy, the programme helps young people overcome some of life's toughest challenges and work towards a brighter future.

If you have friends, family, colleagues, or fellow Blues who you think would enjoy taking part, we'd be hugely grateful if you could help spread the word and encourage them to sign up.

Supporters are asked to pay a £35 registration fee and commit to raising a minimum of £150, with every penny helping us continue delivering our life-changing work.

Every additional participant helps us raise more funds to support vulnerable young people across our community.

Jimmy Hogan RIP

John Mitchels would like to recognise the recent passing of the great James ‘Jimmy’ Hogan. Jimmy has always been a close friend of John Mitchels being an ex player and close friend to so many players and committee members for nearly half a century.

Jimmy came to settle in Liverpool from Glasgow over 45 years ago but his heart never left his beloved Glasgow and he staunchly followed Celtic through the Liverpool Celtic supporters club throughout his life. Indeed many claim Jimmy brought the ‘It’s a grand old team to play for’ chant to his next love Everton FC which has been a regular song at Goodison Park and now the Hill Dickenson stadium every week since he first sang it on the terraces.

Throughout the 1980s many of us met Jimmy through the old Liverpool Irish Centre were he was a much loved and respected centre midfield player for Finn Harps AFC. At that highly successful sporting time Jimmy was also the manager of the famous Chauffeurs night club on Hope Street. His friendly, welcoming personality combined perfectly with his strong physical capability and firm straight talking approach. This enabled customers to feel comfortable, happy and safe within such a unique social environment and made this venue a hugely popular place seven days a week. Indeed the most common sentence at 1am when leaving the Mount Pleasant Irish Centre was ‘Who’s coming to Chauffeurs?’

Jimmy was known by so many fondly throughout Glasgow and Liverpool over the years. Indeed whenever the lads from the Liverpool Celtic supporters club ever went to Park Head they would only need to be with Jimmy or mention his name and there was always a welcome from countless locals at the ground who knew Jimmy.

A great friend of the Liverpool Irish Centre Jimmy recently worked on the committee making sure many social and welfare issues were considered for the welfare of all those connected with the centre and it’s activities. He can truely be associated with the growing success of the centre.

The world will be a much better place having been touched by the great Jimmy Hogan and his memory will live on especially through his lovely family and the many of us who can call him a truely sincere, welcoming and caring friend. Whichever room Jimmy was in there were always smiles and laughter. All at John Mitchels GAA and further afield raise our glasses to such a wonderful man who is now a legend and who will be singing and dancing with the many other great friends who have gone before us. Rest in peace our good friend James ‘Jimmy’ Hogan 💚💙🙏
