I had 40 minutes spare between coaching sessions.
The choice was to do something or to do nothing.
Since something is better than nothing, I chose that option.
Managed five sets of hang cleans, five sets of push press and five sets of front squats.
Was it the most challenging session ever, weight-wise? No.
But did I feel better for doing it? Absolutely!
Sometimes, instead of saying “I can’t do that”, try saying: “What can I do?”
Then do that.
Something always trumps nothing .

At 12 months off 60, I want to be all about the bulk! Who’s with me?

No need to take the bar for a walk when you’re back-squatting!

I started this video with a lie.
The majority of my clients don’t love the act of training.
But they love how they feel afterwards.
And they love how their body changes when they do it.
I’ve got a few clients who actually love the act of training.
And I’ve got quite a few who hate it but do it because they know they have to.
All of them pay me to ensure they show up and do the work.
Yes it costs more for a personal trainer or small group programme.
But if you’re paying £20 a month for a commercial gym membership, but you never go, how is that better value?
Make it make sense.

Stop doing this!
Actually, this is a very good ab exercise
The problem is that I stopped at 15 reps when clearly I could have kept going.
This happened because I had no-one standing next to me saying “come on, you’ve got a least 5 more in the tank there.”
And if I’m staying in my comfort zone, someone who spends all day in a gym and is incentivised to train hard, what hope have you got?
You’re probably squeezing a training session in around a stressful job and other commitments.
Truth is, You can’t put a price on having a coach there to point out when something is too easy or you’ve got another three reps in the tank. It’s the difference between success and treading water.
You might be following a brilliant program, but if you’re not challenging yourself enough, you might never make any real progress.
Pretty soon you’re going to get fed up and give up.
Invest in a coach and make all your training sessions count.

Deadlifts are like an old friend to me.
I used to deadlift a lot.
Back in time, my one rep max was 152kg and I could perform 10 reps at 110kg.
Then I moved onto Olympic lifting and it was all about clean pulls and clean deadlifts which kind of look like a deadlift but have a more knee dominant set up.
Anyway, when I just want to lift some weight without thinking about it too much, I just go back to deadlifts, like a happy place.
What’s your happy place in the gym?
Don’t have one?
Aw, that’s sad. Let’s get you one.

Just a few snippets from my week of training.
Just showing up.
Doing it when I’m in the mood.
Doing it when I’m not, but being glad once I’m five minutes in.
Training to keep my strength and muscle.
Training to stay in half decent shape too. Not ashamed to say there’s a little bit of vanity in there.
Training to live a long, mobile, independent life too.
All of those things can be true simultaneously.
Mostly just training because it’s who I am, as much as what I do.
It could be you too.
You just have to start.
And if you’ve never done it before, that’s the best possible place to
start.😊

There’s something about being a woman over 50.
You’ve just had enough of being told what to do.
I understand, so I’m not going to do that.
I’m actually going to beg you to do something; literally beg you.
If you’re not already doing it, please start working on getting stronger.
It will literally change your life, not just in the short term but for years to come.
Getting stronger will make you better at everything.
Getting stronger will make you more confident.
Getting stronger will empower you.
Getting stronger will make you independent.
Getting stronger will change the way you carry yourself in the world.
Getting stronger will make you appreciate your body, possibly for the first time in your life.
Getting stronger will slow the aging process.
And there’s something else. Working on getting stronger may even make you love the gym, even if can’t think of anything worse right now.
If you don’t believe me, get in touch and let me change your mind. That’s it, that’s my pitch.
What do you think?

Oly (lifting) and I are back together.
It’s nothing serious . We’re seeing how it goes, having fun in each other’s company.
Will we make it official? Rekindle the magic on the competition platform again?
Hard to say. I suppose it would be a shame not to try for one last comp while I’m still in the W55 age group.
But for now, we’re taking it slow.
Just enjoying hanging out.

International Women’s Day caught me out yesterday
Despite being the owner of a women-only gym, I didn’t post a thing.
That’s because it fell on a Sunday and Sunday is my ONLY day off.
This is a boundary that I recently set for myself.
Believe me, as a self-employed woman in my line of work, this proved difficult to uphold at the start because I am my own worst enemy.
I’ve always prided myself on being available to my clients whenever they need me. But I realised that kind of dedication takes its toll.
You need space and time for yourself. And this is something women struggle with, generally. We give all of ourselves to other people all the time. Our families come before us. Our jobs come before us. We are the very pack horses of emotional labour.
We often forego our gym sessions in a family or work crisis. We’re so busy organising everyone else that we have to settle for less than ideal nutrition choices for ourselves. We feel guilty if we put ourselves first and guilty if we go off track
I created my gym, Project Me as the antidote to all that.
The clue is in the name. As a client here, you are encouraged to close the door on the rest of the world and enjoy some me time working on your own goals.
And, newsflash, you deserve this!
Truth is, you do much better giving yourself to others if you put yourself first now and again.
There is a reason they tell you to fix your own oxygen mask first on a plane before helping other people.
Let this be the year that you set some boundaries for yourself and stick to them.
And let this day be henceforth known as “Happy International Women’s Boundary Day.
Pass it on to any women you know that need to hear this.
Come to think of it, that’s probably all of them!
