Every four years, the World Cup asks us to believe that football has the power to bring nations together.
Right now, with regions in conflict and countries divided, that idea is harder to hold. But Oxford Phoenix FC have been proving it quietly, every week, since 2021.
The club started as a series of training sessions for refugees and asylum seeking players in Oxford - supported by Oxford United in the Community, Refugee Resource, Asylum Welcome and Oxfordshire FA. When the team first came together, they had no name and no kit of their own. So the players chose both. They wrote the identity. They built the badge.
Yallah Phoenix. From the Ashes We Rise.
In 2026, Oxford Phoenix played their first season in the Oxfordshire Senior League - a squad made up of 98% refugee or asylum seeking young men, many displaced by war and political instability, competing in league football because the game gave them a reason to keep going. They reached the Ivor Gubbins Cup Final. They earned every minute of it.
“When I put up my country’s flag, I feel confident because I’m proud of my country. It represents many things: culture, family, the connection between football and nationality.” - Abdou Sall, midfielder.
Sokito hosted the squad in London to close out the season. A day to celebrate what they’ve built, try on some boots and reflect on memories old and new, with football as the link.
“It’s a pleasure to play with Oxford Phoenix because I’ve met new friends. It allows me to play as a team, to play together, to win together, to defend the Phoenix colours.” - Ibrahima Diallo, defender.
The players don’t need a World Cup to understand what the tournament is supposed to stand for. They already live it.
“All nations come together and play football, and just have a fun time with peace outside the crazy world.” - Arvin Seyed Sajadi, left back.
Sokito are supplying Oxford Phoenix FC with boots for the 26/27 season. A small thing in the context of what this club represents but the start of what we hope will be a long, meaningful partnership.
