Refuelling – when is the best time to eat after exercise?
The best time to start refuelling after exercise is as soon as possible after training really, then continuing to eat a carby snack roughly every 2 hours. This is more effective than eating a large meal, as glucose from the bloodstream can only pass into the muscle cells at a fixed rate determined partly by insulin levels.
A larger amount of glucose is not necessarily taken into the cells quicker than a smaller amount and the remainder would be turned into fat! The enzymes that convert glucose into glycogen unfortunately can only work at a set speed.
For example; a small meal containing 50g of carbs would be absorbed into the bloodstream and virtually all of it would be converted into glycogen within roughly 2 hours. There is very little risk of any of the carbs being converted into fat. If a high carb meal is eaten, unused glucose in the bloodstream would be turned away and stored as fat.
A delay in eating carbs after exercise could make glycogen manufacture slower and in turn it would take longer to refuel.
Check out this paper; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3132449
“The results suggest that delaying the ingestion of a carbohydrate supplement post-exercise will result in a reduced rate of muscle glycogen storage.”
