A wafter bait is a type of hookbait used in carp fishing thatās designed to just about counterbalance the weight of the hook, making it "critically balanced." Unlike a pop-up, which floats high above the lakebed, or a bottom bait, which sits flat on the deck, a wafter hovers just above the bottom or sits lightly, making it easier for the carp to suck in without suspicion. The idea is that when a fish inspects the bait, the minimal resistance allows it to be drawn into the carpās mouth more easily, increasing the chances of a secure hook hold.
Wafters are particularly effective when fishing over beds of bait or in pressured waters where fish are wary of unnaturally behaving baits. They can be used with a variety of rigsālike the Ronnie, D-rig, or German rigāand are often paired with a hook size and pattern that complements the bait's buoyancy. The goal is subtlety: the hook and bait behave naturally, yet the mechanics of the rig ensure the hook turns and grabs when the bait is taken.
