One of the biggest hurdles that’s holding people back from starting their fitness journey and making the progress they want is gym anxiety.

It’s normal to feel like everyone is watching you or that you don’t fully know what you’re doing and maybe that you don’t belong.

But the more you go, and get out of your comfort zone, the sooner you’ll be able to get over this feeling.

Here are some things that can help you in that starting phase:

- Go with a friend
- Go at off peak hours
- Have a plan for the workout
- Watch helpful videos before you go
- Try different things
- Don’t take it too serious or be harsh on yourself

Even when you feel uncomfortable, just keep on showing up because eventually the feeling goes away.

Let’s debunk some fitness myths!

1. Sadly you can’t target specific body parts that you want to lose fat from, it’s a gradual process and you’ll lose fat from different parts of the body. So doing crunches won’t get rid of belly fat

2. Stretches are important but also leave your muscles a little bit weaker so don’t do extensive static stretching when weight lifting, instead do a set or two of the exercise with a small amount of weights.

3. Weight training is one of the best ways of losing fat!

4. Free weights are great but so are machines! Some machines are better than others though

5. Eating food after 6pm won’t make you fat, all that matters is calories in and calories out.

The worst thing you can do on your fitness journey is be too strict with yourself, cut out everything you enjoy and do workouts you hate just to chase the end goal.

When you find healthy food that you like, a schedule that works for you and workouts which you enjoy, the whole process won’t feel like a chore anymore but instead you’ll actually look forward to improving everyday.

ARMS TRANSFORMED 💪🏻

The first photo was taken roughly 2 years ago when I was built like a twig. Not the best first picture but you can definitely tell the difference!

There is no special method or exercise that I used, just tried to stay consistent for a while and that’s how you make progress.

If you dislike going the gym for one reason or another, here are 5 things that will make you enjoy it more!

1. Having a schedule and a plan saves you going the gym, winging it for a bit and going home feeling you haven’t actually achieved anything

2. If you have any mates bring them with you! Quality bonding time and they can push you to do that extra rep

3. You don’t want to be doing the same exercises over and over and over again because it’ll get boring, have a go at that scary looking machine which you don’t really know how to use! Keep it fresh

4. We all go the gym to make some type of progress, so take pictures and videos as motivation because at the end of the day it’s you vs you, so the only motivation you have is to better yourself 😎 inspirational I know

5. Get some Eminem on and pretend you’re in a music video. +10 strength , nah but good music is essential. The pain when u forget your headphones knowing you’ll have to listen to the UK top 50 on the gym radio kills the mood.

1. Tuck your elbows in to ease stress on the shoulder and put more emphasis on the chest.

2. Try and have a slight arch in your back.

3. Bring the weight back down controlled and slowly.
