🥋 Why Open Mats Matter

Open mats are one of the best parts of Jiu-Jitsu.

Unlike a structured class, an open mat gives you the freedom to work on exactly what you need. Want competition rounds? Go for it. Looking for some lighter rolls? No problem. Need to drill a technique, troubleshoot a position, or ask a coach a question? This is the place to do it.

Open mats allow you to experiment, explore and develop your own game at your own pace. They’re a chance to put techniques into practice, test ideas and learn from different training partners.

They’re also a great opportunity to welcome people from other academies onto the mats. Different styles, different experiences and new training partners help everyone improve.

Whether you’re preparing for competition, learning something new, or just enjoying time on the mats with good people, open mats are where some of the best learning happens.

🥋 Circle of Vigour Open Mat takes place every Sunday at 10:00am.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of academy affiliation. Come and roll, drill, learn, ask questions and enjoy some mat time with a great group of people.

See you on the mats. 👊

Thinking about trying Jiu-Jitsu?

Most people don’t quit.

They just never start.

They spend months telling themselves they’ll begin when they’re fitter, stronger, younger, more confident, or have more time.

The truth is, nobody walks through the door feeling ready.

What matters is taking that first step.

This is what you’ll find at Circle of Vigour:

âś” No egos
âś” No intimidation
âś” Good people helping each other improve

Whether you’re 18 or 58, completely new to martial arts or looking for a fresh start, you’ll be welcomed from day one.

Your first week is completely free.

Every person in this photo started as a beginner.

Different ages.

Different backgrounds.

Different goals.

Some joined to get fit.

Some joined to learn self-defence.

Some joined to compete.

Some simply wanted to try something new.

What they found was a welcoming community, supportive training partners, and a place they genuinely enjoy being.

Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone.

You just need the right circle.

One year ago, Jacques and I picked up the keys to an empty unit in Little Horwood.

We had no mats.

No members.

No classes.

Just a vision of building something special.

We wanted to create more than just a Jiu-Jitsu academy.

We wanted to build a place where people could learn, improve, challenge themselves, make friends and feel welcome from day one.

A year later, we’re incredibly proud of what Circle of Vigour Jiu-Jitsu has become.

The academy isn’t the building.

It’s the people inside it.

Thank you to every member, parent, visitor, friend and supporter who has been part of the journey so far.

We’ve celebrated promotions, competition success, seminars, community events and countless small victories along the way.

Most importantly, we’ve built an amazing community.

Here’s to Year Two.

Thank you for the incredible content

What a day at COV BJJ

Round two with — this time NoGi.

The levels, the detail, and the energy on the mats were top class once again.

We had another brilliant turnout with visitors from other gyms coming down to train, share knowledge, and be part of the experience.

That’s exactly what Jiu-Jitsu is about. Creating connections, learning, improving, and enjoying the process together.

The buzz in the room was unreal from start to finish.

We’re grateful to everyone who came down and made it what it was.

And of course, huge appreciation to for making it happen.

More days like this to come.

Most people think jiu-jitsu is just about fighting.

But the longer you train, the more you realise it’s about so much more than that.

It’s learning to stay calm under pressure.
Building confidence.
Solving problems in real time.
Growing through discomfort.

And somewhere along the way, training partners become friends and the academy becomes part of your routine, your mindset and your community.

No ego.
No shortcuts.
Just good people helping each other improve every day.

If you’ve ever thought about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, this is your sign to start.

Come and try a free class at Circle of Vigour Jiu-Jitsu in Little Horwood. Beginners always welcome.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week.

For a lot of people, Jiu-Jitsu becomes more than just training. It becomes routine, structure, community, challenge, support and a place to switch off from everything else going on outside the mats.

Sometimes people walk through the doors carrying stress, anxiety, burnout, low confidence or things they never talk about openly. For an hour or two, training gives people space to breathe again.

At Circle of Vigour, we’re proud to be building an environment where people feel welcome, supported and part of something positive regardless of experience, age or fitness level.

You do not need to be tough to start.
You just need the right circle.

Today the kids from Circle of Vigour Jiu Jitsu stepped onto the mats at the RGA Bucks interclub and honestly made us all proud.

Huge shoutout to Francesca on her very first competition.
Two matches, two dominant wins in a best-of-three format, and such a composed performance throughout. She listened brilliantly, stayed focused, and went out there and did exactly what she needed to do. For a first competition, that level of composure was incredible to see.

Massive well done as well to her sister Georgina (first competition) who was put into a really tough bracket against some strong opposition. Despite that, she kept pushing forward, scored well against both opponents, and came away with a bronze medal. More importantly, she showed real grit and determination throughout the day and we’re super proud of her.

And Willow… another brilliant performance in only her second competition. Calm, technical, and confident from start to finish, securing her second armbar submission in competition. Two competitions. Two armbars. That’s becoming a trademark already.

Competition days are never just about medals.
They’re about courage, growth, learning to handle pressure, and testing yourself in ways most people never will — and all three girls represented Circle of Vigour Jiu Jitsu brilliantly today.

Proud academy moment. 👏🥋
