Setsudo Ki Aikido

Setsudo Ki Aikido Ki-Aikido Clubs in Liskeard, Buckfastleigh, Calstock, Totnes and Lerryn. The study of Ki Aikido fosters self-awareness, as well as awareness of others.

We are a small Aikido school with Dojos in Devon and Cornwall: Clubs in Buckfastleigh, Liskeard, Lerryn, Calstock and Totnes. Ki Aikido takes the form of a Japanese martial art but in reality it is a study of mind/body coordination, and ki (life energy). This discipline nurtures inner strength and stability giving us tools to face life’s challenges without fighting or running away. Attacks are con

trolled by directing the attacker’s energy in order to pin, throw, disarm or immobilise. This means that physical strength is not of primary importance in Ki Aikido training, and consequently it can be learned by anyone willing, regardless of size, age, or gender. It increases confidence, relaxation and resilience and begins and ends with respect. The universal principles that we learn through our Aikido practice can be applied to every aspect of our daily living. With mind and body unified, we are better able to look within ourselves, interact sincerely with others, and make more efficient use of ourselves in all of our endeavours.

“Economy is the basis of society. When the economy is stable, society develops. The ideal economy combines the spiritual and the material, and the best commodities to trade in are sincerity and love.”

O Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba, Founder of Aikido

A special day - Yesterday’s course in the very Dojo where several of us started our aikido journey back in the 90’s. And now we uplifting and enlightening day, stretching the limits of what we think we can do (two partners holding and four different exercises in one go! So many arms!)
Thank you Sensei Stuart for a glorious day and to Sensei Jeremy for hosting us so brilliantly.
A wonderful dojo with that fabulous view over Totnes through arched windows 🌅😍

“Those who practice the Art of Peace must protect the domain of Mother Nature, the divine reflection of creation, and keep it lovely and fresh. Warriorship gives birth to natural beauty. The subtle techniques of a warrior arise as naturally as the appearance of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Warriorship is none other than the vitality that sustains all life.”
Morihei Ueshiba
(‘O’ Sensei, the father of Aikido)

A lively time in lovely Lerryn!
Our course at the weekend in the sleepy Cornish Village saw another fascinating day of Aikido. Concentrating on really putting ourselves in our partner’s place, agreeing with their ki and being supportive of our partner in moving forward, oh and rolling properly!
Thank you Sensei Jeremy for another great day on the mat 🙌.

“LIFE IS GROWTH. If we stop growing, technically and spiritually, we are as good as dead. The Art of Peace is a celebration of the bonding of heaven, earth and humankind. It is all that is true, good, and beautiful.”

Another fabulous few days of Aikido and camping by the sea.
Sad to say goodbye to our old haunt of Downderry, but alas the hall was no longer available. Thurlestone is proving to be a great new home for our summer course though!

May course 2025. Just a little flavour of our practice, delving in to 9th form shihonagi, 15th form kokunagi and more besides. Also how to move your partner’s mind when holding from behind and pinning you back. The subtle attention to timing and agreement with their ki which is so necessary.

‘Do’ (Tao) the character for ‘way, path’

“The Way of a Warrior is based on humanity, love and sincerity; the heart of martial valour is true bravery, wisdom, love and friendship. Emphasis on the physical aspects of warriorship is futile, for the power of the body is always limited.”
Morihei Ueshiba (O’Sensei)

Hand in hand with our aikido training we practice a form of Ki massage called Kiatsu. Generally the thumb is used to apply pressure and ‘extend Ki’ or ‘life energy to one’s partner to enable relaxation and healing in muscle tissue. One can work along meridian lines of the body and/or allow the hands to be intuitive in finding the areas which need attention. It’s very rewarding when you can feel tight muscle give way and become pliable through the simple application of pressure with ‘Ki’. A bit like melting hard lumps of butter with your thumb!

‘Ki’ the character for ‘vital energy’, can also be described as ‘spirit, will, health’, the very energy which courses through us and makes us feel alive!

How wonderful to have our Sensei back on the mat with us this Sunday 💜. A special day to say the least!
While the wind and rain lashed at the windows we had a brilliant day of 3rd form ikyo and nikyo safe and dry on the inside. What better way to spend a rainy Sunday! (Along with delicious sticky ginger cake for tea break 😋)
