Another tight encounter ends in defeat as fine margins prove costly.

The reverse fixture from Sunday saw another closely fought contest against Shakespeare United, with both sides fully aware of the importance of the result. It followed a similar pattern to the weekend, with Shakespeare having the better of the early exchanges, going close with a header that drifted past Ryan’s right-hand post.

We grew into the game and had the better chances of the first half. Foz went the closest to scoring when he was played through one-on-one but, with the keeper holding his position well, his effort was kept out. Just before the break Tommy put in a superb cross from the right which was met by Jake G at the front post who saw his header across goal land on the roof of the net as we went in level.

The breakthrough came in the second half after a scrappy spell in midfield where possession changed hands a few times before falling to Shakespeare on their left. The ball was worked wide and crossed in, eventually being met at the back post and headed firmly into the top right corner. The game continued as a physical battle throughout, and Shakespeare doubled their lead with around ten minutes to go, a long-range effort looping into the top corner after a foul in the build-up was not given.

We pushed hard in the closing stages, throwing bodies forward, with our best chance coming when Boz delivered from the right and Jake G headed powerfully towards the bottom left corner, but the keeper saw it all the way and made the save. A couple of efforts from distance followed, but it was not to be.

Another game decided by fine margins against a strong side, with plenty still to play for as we head into the final run of fixtures.

First league defeat of the season in a game of fine margins.

A close encounter at the top end of the table saw us suffer our first league defeat of the season, losing 3–1 at home to Shakespeare United. It was a game that could have looked very different, but ultimately came down to missed opportunities at one end and clinical finishing at the other.

We could have gone ahead inside the opening ten seconds when Foz capitalised on a missed clearance, but the keeper stood strong and made a good save. The opening 20 minutes were evenly contested before Shakespeare took the lead after their forward line reacted quickest to a loose ball in and around our box. They doubled their lead five minutes later in very similar fashion, punishing another loose ball situation.

We had a couple of good chances before half time, with Stocks going close from the edge of the box, while Foz, Aidan and Matt were all causing problems and getting us into good areas. We came out strongly in the second half and pulled one back almost immediately when Harvey whipped a ball in from deep on the right, Foz brought it down on the edge of the box and finished through the keeper’s legs to set the half up perfectly. From there we dominated the ball and chances continued to come as we pushed for an equaliser, with Foz and Stocks both going close. To Shakespeare’s credit, their last-ditch defending was superb on a number of occasions and stopped what looked like certain goals.

As we pushed forward, Shakespeare added a third on the counter attack. We kept going and did not let our heads drop, but it was just one of those days where the ball would not quite fall for us. Attention now turns to the reverse fixture on Wednesday.

A point gained in a game that swung both ways.

Tough games every week going into the latter stage of the season and this one was no different against a tricky Morning Star side. We struggled to adjust early on in the windy conditions and were caught cold inside the opening minute as they scored from a corner. We started to grow into the game after that and thought we had equalised when Stocks finished well, only for it to be ruled offside and questionably so.

We did get back into it after some good play down the left involving Foz and Stocks, with the ball eventually falling to Aidan, who placed it into the far corner to make it 1–1. Morning Star hit back quickly though as a handball in the box led to a penalty which was converted, and we had Raz to thank for keeping it at 2–1 before half time with a strong save in a one-on-one.

The second half was a different game and we were the better side for long periods, creating chances with the front three well supported by the midfield and new signing Harvey. Morning Star did get a third through a strike from distance that was redirected into the corner, but we kept pushing and Stocks brought us back into the game with a composed finish. We continued to press and got the equaliser when Aidan found Harvey, who played a perfectly weighted pass through for Foz to finish clinically. We nearly won it late on as Stocks saw an effort well saved, and both he and Foz had earlier efforts come back off the post on another day could have made the difference.

In the end, it finished 3–3 and probably a very good point considering how the game unfolded.

MOTM: Aidan – Ironically was not supposed to start but absences meant his name made it on the team sheet and perhaps fortunately so because he put in a brilliant shift down the right and caused problems all game long.
