Yesterday Will Jones crossed the finish line at IRONMAN Tours and became an IRONMAN.
What makes this one special isn’t just the result. It’s the journey.
Less than a year ago, a 5km run felt daunting. An hour on the bike felt like forever. Swimming more than 1km seemed a huge challenge.
Yesterday he swam 3.8km in 1:02:19, placing 35th in his age group out of 398, rode 180km in 6:17:19, and then dug deep through a brutally hot marathon to finish in 13:28:44.
The numbers tell part of the story.
The bigger story is the consistency.
The early mornings before work.
The cold winter sessions around North Cornwall
The long rides when motivation wasn’t there.
The weeks where training felt hard and life threw massive curve balls!
The moments of doubt that every athlete experiences.
Will never missed sight of the goal. He kept turning up, kept doing the work and trusted the process and his communication was great.
As a coach, results are great, but seeing someone discover what they’re capable of is even better. Watching Will go from wondering if an Ironman was possible to standing on that finish line as an Ironman finisher has been incredibly rewarding.
Very proud of you, mate.
Enjoy this one. You’ve earned every second of it.
