A few words from I. Farrington (Club Chairperson)

Sunday marks a sad day for Leyland CC as Steve Vardy straps on his pads for one last time before retiring from playing.

Steve has enjoyed a fantastic career and has become an extremely popular member of the club over the last 20 years – something made even more remarkable by the fact that he only took up the game at the age of 48!

Beginning his cricketing life as a canny left-arm spinner, Steve’s very first ball in competitive cricket was hit for six. He recovered pretty well though, going on to finish with figures of 5 for 8!

An obdurate left-handed batter who always put a high price on his wicket, Steve won the 4th XI league batting averages in 2016, finishing the season with an average of 54 and a top score of 46*.

A huge thank you to Steve for everything he has given to Leyland CC over the years. We very much hope he’ll remain a big part of the club and that we can continue to benefit from his enthusiasm, experience and support long after his playing days are over.
