It’s reaching that time of year — I know, I’m sorry! — when the weather looks like it’s about to take a turn. Great for the land, but not so great for those of us who work outside!

However, unless conditions are unsafe, lessons and clinics will still go ahead — a bit of rain is not an automatic cancellation.

Late cancellations leave gaps in full teaching days that are often impossible to fill, so please check the cancellation policy before booking and make sure you’re happy to commit to your place.

You can find the full cancellation policy here:

By booking a lesson, schooling session, mindset session, clinic, event, course, holiday-cover visit or any other service with Sharon Johnson Equestrian, you agree to the following Terms and Conditions.

Can you recognise what needs to change when you ride alone—or are you relying on the next instruction?

Good coaching should help you understand what you’re changing, why you’re changing it and what you should begin to feel.

The aim is to develop a thoughtful, confident and independent rider—not dependency on the coach.

WHAT DO I LOOK FOR IN TRANSITIONS WHEN I’M COACHING—AND WHY DO THEY MATTER?

Transitions happen during every ride, often without much thought beyond whether the horse changed pace when asked.

But that isn’t all I’m watching.

A transition can look successful while revealing far more about the horse, the rider and the training.

So, what should a good transition actually look and feel like? What might it tell us—and why does getting it right matter?

“LET’S JUST GET THIS DONE.”

That was how competing once felt for Gemma.

Then came the day she rode into the ring thinking:

“THIS IS GREAT!”

And yes—she went on to clear 1.20m and win the puissance with Bart.

But what happened between those two moments?

Gemma has told the story with complete honesty—and it is about far more than the height of a fence.

Guess who was number 1 superstar again today? Yep, it was Bart, this little horse has the biggest heart and tries his socks off! I’ll be sad to hand the reins back for sure!

Apart from the riding it was a mixed bag of lessons today, from teaching the most gorgeous 6 yr old girls the basics of independent riding, to introducing a lovely young horse to lateral work, and meeting super new clients.

I’ve driven over 100miles but everyone was worth it.

I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again, I love my job 🐴❤️

ANOTHER TRANSFORMATION!

Meet Legend—and he really does live up to his name!

Legend is an ex-racehorse owned by my client Sharon. The first image was taken during only our second lesson together in late spring; the second was taken a couple of weeks ago.

Retraining an ex-racehorse isn’t about simply asking for a different head position. The horse has to learn a new way of balancing, carrying a rider and using its whole body—while gradually developing the strength and muscles required for its new job.

Ex-racehorses may not initially understand conventional leg aids in the same way as a horse that has been produced for general ridden work. Legend was very behind the leg, so an important part of our training has been helping him understand and respond to Sharon’s forward aids without constant kicking or nagging.

Our focus has been on creating a clearer forward response while improving his rhythm, relaxation, balance and confidence in the work.

A few weeks ago, Legend attended his first local dressage competition—and achieved a fantastic **70%**!

We’ve only been working together for a relatively short time and there is still plenty to develop, but I’m incredibly happy with the progress they’re making.

Well done, Sharon and Legend. You’re heading in exactly the right direction, and I’m excited to see where we go next!

REMEMBER BART FROM YESTERDAY?

Bart belongs to my sponsored rider and very good friend, Gemma—and together they have quite a story.

There was a time when Gemma struggled mentally with the thought of jumping a 70cm course. The physical ability was there, but anxiety, doubt and everything her mind told her *might* happen prevented her from accessing it.

Our work hasn’t simply been about making the fences bigger. It has been about understanding the thoughts behind the fear, breaking challenges into manageable pieces and helping Gemma learn to trust both herself and Bart.

The first photograph shows Gemma and Bart jumping 70cm at an earlier competition.

The second shows them clearing **1.20m to win the puissance**.

That is an additional 50cm—but the real transformation goes far beyond the height of the fence. Look at the confidence, commitment, trust and belief in the partnership.

There was no magic phrase and no overnight fix. Gemma did the work, kept showing up and gradually changed what she believed she was capable of.

I couldn’t be prouder of this partnership or happier to have them representing Sharon Johnson Equestrian.

If your mind is preventing you from doing something you’re physically capable of, confidence and performance coaching can help.
