daptation to accidents, injuries, surgeries, major illnesses or on-going/repetitive emotional or physical stress. Thomas Hanna (Hanna Somatics) termed this state of chronically tight muscles that can't let go as Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) and described SMA as the root cause chronic pain. By improving the connection between the brain and the muscles people learn to regain sensation and motor control of muscles and movement. Chronically tight muscles affect physical structure and alter posture and movement. Examples of Sensory Motor Amnesia include:

• chronic back pain
• sciatica
• leg length discrepancy
• hip pain
• altered gait
• plantarfasciitis
• piriformis syndrome
• TMJ/TMD
• neck/shoulder pain
• scoliosis

Those suffering from SMA lose their ability to release and relax muscles and move freely. Clinical Essential Somatics is taught in 1:1 session with hands on work with the practitioner, focusing on the clients patterns of restricted movement and SMA. Groups classes, are weekly classes that teach Somatic movements and are suitable for those new to Somatics and those whom have undertaken clinical sessions.

'Essential Somatics' builds on the work of Thomas Hanna (Hanna Somtics), as well as bringing in the work of new pioneers in the field of Somatic Movement.

Summer solstice swim in the Atlantic Ocean off the Isle off Harris.

13 degree air temp and the water was lovely,

I could have stayed there ages,

The water was so clean and clean, the beach beautiful,

The perfect tonic to feed the heart and soul!

Let’s sauna!!

This year saunas have become a part of my life but out in nature, the view, the fields, the sea, and with many the community!

There are so many health benefits to it too.

This one totally surpassed my expectation though looking out from Harris on the Outer Hebrides pretty much in the middle of nowhere!

Healing on so many levels!

Hear nature
Feel nature

We are nature, and we live ina world so disconnected from if our nervous system is crying out for more connection with the earth.

All the other things help, maybe, sometimes, but there is nothing that can replace this.

SEATED CABLE ROW

It wasn’t as easy for Laura to do this in a way that people actually do it as she naturally dormant tend you overly round her upper back, and a slight lean forward can be a variation.

For a lot of people though they are very fixed in a rounded position from habitual postures and the effects of stresses on the body

Being able to open the chest and activate the lats can be a challenge

We are living creating this content for people providing hopefully advice and information, with a laugh along the way

The comment and feedback has been amazing, so we’ll stick around a bit longer

Single arm dumbell row are a great movement often not performed to maximum effect!

With the goal to hit the lats, many people are using their traps to do the movement.

Many people struggle to feel and connect with their lats anyway making it more challenging.

And to help you progress along with knowing variations of it.

Often people recreate shapes, go through the motions and don’t progress they way they had hoped

This a REAL in action as it were clip of how I work with people

Even with super experienced lifters like we cannot be hitting things the muscles in the way we want.

This is because our brain knows what it knows and not want it doesn’t,

we are good at our habits, and this can actually prevent us from being able to properly feels other aspects of our body and movement (there’s science to why)

So here is a great example of how a really simple thing that I noticed about Laura’s movement, a very slight cue tweak and an instant change in how she was moving and then she could feel and hit the muscles she wanted in a different way.

Sometimes as experienced lifters it’s actually hard to feel and make subtle changes because of developing habits along with hours and hour of practice.

This is the second time in 2 days I’ve helped experience lifters make subtle changes that have either improved their technique or changed the load on their back causing them pain.

3 years!!!! 🤩🤓🥳

3 years since submitting my first assignment felt so scary!!!

But here we are done, last one submitted glass in hand, trying not to think about what next!!

The last 3 years consolidated so much, about what I knew, where I was going and actually how bloody complicated pain is😳

For all those on SM giving out simple claims and diagnosis that might sound reasonable but 9/10 they really aren’t, you are so much more than just a body or a brain, you are a complex lived experience, a nervous system, physiology and so much more.

You are unique!

Where next who knows?

I do have my amazing family to thank without them this wouldn’t not have been possible and almost more importantly the incredible Laura Rathbone 🏳️‍🌈 who with her mentoring, encouragement, support and belief in me I probably still would be 3 years down the line thinking about it. 💕

So often people experience low back when training and generally with no idea why.

This is a classic with bent over rows and more commonly when someone is hypermobile in their knees.

Understanding what you are doing, and how to correct that is a game changer,

Not only does it make your training far more comfortable but it also hits the right muscles
