Evening all,

Double apologies to start the mail. Firstly, sorry for the 2nd of the month start to the leagues, but I am in America and things take a little longer when abroad. Secondly, apologies to anyone not in the box they expected – as ever when new players join higher up in the boxes everyone else shuffles down – nothing I can do about it as I will always place good players as high as I can as it is better for the leagues. Please be assured that all players always remain in the rankings exactly as they were before the players are added.

Now on to the good news. The leagues go from strength to strength and new members continue to join. The number of matches being played each month is now at an amazing level, so well played one and all. The strength at the top of the leagues is superb and the depth through the leagues is unrivalled across Hertfordshire. Well done everyone what a fantastic club we have built.

Congratulations to Greg Millhouse, winner of the Premier League again. Superb effort, and will take another one to do it again.

Players of the month have been selected and will be up on the notice board at the club as soon as I can arrange it. We are still picking a Squash Levels Player of the Month, a hand picked club Member of the Month and will now be adding a Junior of the Month [which from September will be selected by club coach Greg Millhouse.

The Friday Night Classic will be on the 30th August this month and will be one of the busiest we have ever had. It will as ever contain super competitive box league matches and if you want to nominate your match then please do it as early as possible to reserve your slot. If you do not want to play or can not get a slot, then please come up and support the players and the club by having a beer or two while watching the squash. It’s an excellent fun night every month and one of the reasons we have the best club in the world :))))

Finally onto a little plug for one of our favourite neighbouring clubs. Biggleswade Squash Club, just down the road are having a good event on the 9th August if anyone wants to see some top quality squash at an excellent and friendly club. There will be a BBQ and drinks on the night, and a chance to watch the Biggleswade Championship final between Jay and Owen Ledger. If you have never had the chance to see the twins play then it is a real opportunity to watch some amazing local young squash talent. They are great lads, super competitive and amazing at squash, will be an excellent championship decider, with more than family pride to play for. The event will be at Biggleswade Squash Club, Langford Road, Biggleswade, Beds, SG18 9RA, on the 9th August 2019 ... if you need more information please contact Marcus Gray [email protected] Chariman of Biggleswade and great friend of Letchworth Squash Club.

Cheers all, have a great month of squash and remember love the club, love the members, and most of all - love squash.

Michael

Afternoon one and all,

Firstly some social media notices:

Like / follow our page please: http://www.facebook.com/Letchworthsquash
Follow our Instagram: or http://www.instagram.com/letchworthsquash/

And please join WhatsApp. Our leagues are the best in the world for a reason, and that is the communication between players. We only have two players not on WhatsApp [no names mentioned], and it is by far the best way to get your games organised, stay in touch with your box and the club. Don’t be left out, it’s not some new fangled piece of software Roy, it’s a pretty decent piece of communications software that ¾ of the world uses.

Right, enough nonsense, it’s BOOM time. Well done everyone in the leagues for again getting so many games played this month, 91 games in total so we’re all still chasing that elusive 100 game month. We have three new members this month [big welcome to Alex, William and Lee], a whole new box and a returning player from injury - so every chance that June will be the month. Come on everyone let’s get it done.

Well done to Nathan for claiming back the title of premier league champion, he’s a quality player and the captain of our first team at the club. Special mention to Ben Moss, who has comeback after a long injury absence and won all of his matches 3-0 this month, always a top achievement.

We are approaching holiday season and I have already had my first message asking for someone to be pulled out of the leagues for a month. Just to reiterate my preference from last summer, please don’t pull out of the leagues for a month. It can make my life pretty tricky as the following month when the player comes back in everyone below them will be dropped a place with many players missing out on promotion. If you genuinely can not play any games in a month then go down with zero points, no real harm done as the following month you’ll probably come straight back up again. Just let your fellow box member know what’s happening as early as possible.

The Friday Night Classic was absolutely superb again on Friday, despite three of the matches being a little one sided, the final match was an absolute cracker between Neil and Greg. This month the FNC will be on the 28th June so remember to nominate a game from your box to be played on the last Friday of the month at 6.00pm or 6.45pm. For everyone else not playing please come on down to the club and have a beer with your fellow squash members, and support the players that are playing. Please note that these matches are not just for the top players at the club, and any box match can be nominated, all squash is equal at our club and everyone is welcome from any box in the leagues.

That all folks, just to say have a great month of squash, play all your games, welcome the new faces at the club and show them what a superb squash club we have built ourselves.

All the best, love the game and love the club

Evening all,

Special announcement follows at the end of the email, please read it!

That includes you David and Neil!

Here are last month’s leagues and your new leagues for the merry month of May. Congratulations to our Premier League champion Neil Morgan, superb performance again this month. Amazing numbers of matches played again by everyone, 98 matches in the month which is another new record for the club, so well done to one and all for getting those games arranged and played on time. Let’s try for the big 100 this month please, and remember that when most people are playing all their games then it is those players that, in general, progress up the leagues – the bonus points are key!!

A crazy close box happened this month, so well played all those in box three. With Graham winning it on 29 points, all the other players finished on 25 points each. Not ideal for the league organiser, so in a little glimpse behind the curtain here’s how the box was decided: Graham goes up on 29 points in first place. The other players are only judged in the games against each other, so excluding Graham. Stuart comes last as he lost two of those games, and Roy comes first as he didn’t lose any; Luke then comes above Jono because he beat him – simple!! Leaving the finishing order as Graham, Roy, Luke, Jono and Stuart. Apologies to those that went down, especially Stu as he is scary, but it’s the best I could do! Any complaints are of course welcome and will fall on deaf ears :))

That’s it folks except for the special announcement still to come, please keep reading. Just to say the FNC is on the Friday 31st May and if it’s anything like April’s will be amazing. Superb competitive squash was played in all the matches and a lot of people came to watch. For May please nominate your games early and I will try and fit you in. Remember the night is open to every player regardless of standard or box, and if you are not playing then please just come down a watch and get involved with your squash club. It is the best around for miles and miles.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! This month I will be changing the scoring for the box leagues. There are a number of reasons for this but primarily it is to bring our box leagues in line with England Squash. England Squash have a selection of 8 acceptable methods for scoring box leagues, assuming the matches are best of 5. I have selected the method that is closest to our current one. Our current method is based on 9 with 8-1 being the score given to a 3-0 win, for example. The new method is based on 7, and the scores for each result are as follows:

3-0 = 6-1
3-1 = 5-2
3-2 = 4-3
2-0 = 3-1
2-1 = 3-2
2-2 = 3-3
1-0 = 2-1
1-1 = 2-2

As ever there will be a bonus for completing all your matches, this will now be 4 points instead of 5. Occasionally the league has a walkover in it, the score for this is 4-0 but please remember you are not to put walkovers in as official scores without speaking or texting me first. It’s a friendly league and I do not want it littered with walkovers.

All of this will be on the wall at the club, so you do not need to remember it all, and it will only take a month or two to get used to. As ever, all complaints about change can be sent to NotAllChangeIsBad-SomeIsGood-And-SomeIsNecessary@NoOneWillReply.com :))

Cheers all, have a great month of squash, enjoy the game and love the club

Good evening all.

Welcome to the new box leagues for April 2019. And they are bigger than ever and smashing all records across the squash county of Hertfordshire.

There is good news and bad news, and as ever the good news first! What a month, in terms of squash played, quality of squash and the Friday Night Classic. Superb efforts and well done to everyone involved in the club. This month with our 11 box leagues we could have had a total of 110 matches if we’d achieved a perfect month. With three injuries it wasn’t possible but we still had 90 box league games played in total or 82% of all matches played. That is an unbelievable amount of games and a credit to everyone at the club.

Next the “bad” news, we have five new players to the leagues or ‘returning and new’ players to be more precise. This means a new box has been created, so a very nice problem to have. It does, however, mean that most players will be slightly lower in the rankings than they hoped and a lot of players will be in a whole box number lower than they expected. As ever I make no apologies for this, I always try and place people in roughly the right place and some months you may appear to be a loser on this, but it is not the case. The ranking order of every player is maintained and the system is as fair as I can do it. As ever, you are welcome to complain to the league organiser, and I am happy to consider all complaints and not really act on them :))) I do my best and won’t change the system that is working so well.

Fact: these are the best leagues in Hertfordshire, dare we say the world. So well done everyone on all the games played, and let’s break our record and try for 100+ games this month!!

The FNC is on the 26th April this month so save me a match and most importantly save the date and get yourself down to the club at 6.00pm on the last Friday of the month. Meet your club mates, see superb squash, and generally have fun.

That’s all from me folks, as ever love the club, love squash and have a brilliant month on court.
Michael
