A little bit of history....
1. Redhoods was founded in 1968 by the local journalist Eric Scott and his colleague Jack Lake.
2. Initially they played at Shefford Boys’ Home/ Industrial School for Roman Catholic boys.
3. In the early 70’s they moved to Henlow Camp where they used the excellent RAF facilities.
It was at this stage that the tradition was established of completing a badminton evening with a sociable drink at the New Inn, Holwell, Hitchin.
Surprisingly this tradition has survived!
4. In 1976 there was a tightening of security at Henlow and Redhoods had to move out to the Letchworth College. The club played here until 1977, before it moved to the newly built Fearnhill Sports Centre, where it has been ever since.
5. The social side of the club was strengthened by the organisation of an annual Dinner/Dance, which has taken place at a number of venues, including Knebworth Barns and the Broadway Hotel. A wonderful evening was held in 2018 for current and past members and their partners to celebrate 50 years as a club.
6. In the late 70’s the club entered a team in the newly formed Letchworth Badminton League and finished runners up. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and currently has 6 teams spread across 4 leagues.
7. In 1983 the club started its own annual mixed doubles tournament that raises money for a local charity. It is named The Scott Trophy Tournament in honour of Eric Scott, the club’s founder.
Traditionally it has finished with a celebratory meal afterwards in a local pub.
8. In the last 51 years the club has established a tradition of playing badminton in a very social context.
Welcome to Redhoods.....
