Saturday 6th June 2026:
Dear KBC members

Thanks and congratulations to all those intrepid bowlers who braved the 'variable' conditions to take part in today's Sandy Goff Cup competition.

Susanna Checketts and Brian Lycett emerged victorious, having seen off the challenge of Paul Benson and Jo Gaynor in a close contest (3 - 4).

Thanks also to our groundsmen, who had prepared a green which looked as good at the end as it did at the beginning, despite the very wet conditions.

Saturday 2nd May:
Many thanks to everyone who took part in today's Joe Wade Shield competition, and congratulations to our finalists Margaret , Mark , Brian and Graham. Brian and Graham emerged victorious in a hard-fought final and all the finalists deserve a well-earned rest after playing 32 ends and bowling 128 woods throughout the day!

It’s older than you think
Lawn bowls dates back to 13th century England—and even earlier versions were played in ancient Egypt.

Bowls aren’t perfectly round
They’re slightly biased (asymmetrical), which is why they curve instead of rolling straight. That’s what makes the game so strategic.

It was once banned by kings 👑
In medieval England, bowls was banned by King Edward III because soldiers were playing it instead of practicing archery.

The grass matters… a lot 🌱
Different greens play differently—speed, moisture, and cut all affect how the bowl rolls and curves.

It’s one of the most social sports 🤝

Congratulations to our winning team; Simon, Pat, David and our youngest star, Henry!

The team played their indoors final (18 ends) on Sunday 22nd March. After a difficult start (and middle!), the team rallied and made an incredible comeback from a 9-19 deficit with 3 ends to go to force a tie breaker end.

Our first internal tournament, the Joe Wade pairs competition, was held in glorious sunshine.

After a long day of knockout 8 end matches, the final was won by Margot and David who overcame Dave and Susanna (7-5).

We are looking forward to welcoming Wokingham Bowls Club to our beautiful club on Sunday 4th May.
