Most business owners make decisions based on assumptions. The strongest businesses make decisions based on data.

Understanding your numbers helps you identify what’s working, who your ideal customers are, and where your biggest opportunities for growth exist. When you know your data, you know your market.

Your network can open doors, create opportunities, and accelerate business growth—but only if you're intentional about who you surround yourself with.

The most successful business owners don't build large networks; they build the right networks. Connect with people who challenge your thinking, share valuable insights, and align with the direction you're heading.

Ask yourself: Are the people in your network helping you grow, or keeping you where you are?

The money's already yours. You're just spending 86 hours a year asking for it back.

I call it the chase tax — the slow drip of an owner's week spent emailing, phoning and re-sending invoices for work that's already done and delivered.

It's the most common thing I see. When I first look at how a business is actually built, the quickest place to free up cash is nearly always sitting in the debtor book — and usually it's aged debt: invoices long past due, work delivered, money already earned. Almost every owner-led firm has some. Few have anyone whose job it is to chase it before Friday afternoon turns into the collections department.

Here's the shift worth knowing about. There's a Bill before Parliament right now — the Small Business Protections Bill — that moves the ground in owners' favour: a 60-day cap on payment terms, statutory interest at 8% over base, and fining powers for the Small Business Commissioner. Before Parliament, not yet law — but the direction is set.

The firms that win won't wait for the law. They build the collection rhythm now: who owns the debtor number, who makes the call on day 31, what happens next — without it landing back on the owner's desk.

No download, no scorecard to chase — just three questions worth answering this week:

→ Who owns the debtor-days number? Name a person, not 'finance'.
→ Who makes the call on day 31, before it becomes day 61?
→ Are your terms in writing on every invoice that leaves the building?

Answer those three and the chase tax starts shrinking — without it landing back on your Friday afternoon.

What would you do with 86 hours back?

Many businesses struggle because leadership and management are treated as the same thing, but they serve very different purposes.

Great leaders inspire direction and create culture, while great managers ensure consistency, accountability, and operational success. The key is knowing when your business needs leadership, management — or both.
