Lure Fishing on the GUC

Lure Fishing on the GUC Throughout my angling life the Grand Union Canal in Hertfordshire has always been a venue of choice. I hope you enjoy my ramblings on here.

I have been an avid angler for over 55 years, the Grand Union Canal in the Hertfordshire area has always been a venue I have enjoyed. From my early days with my grandfather and father gudgeon bashing to a more strategic approach these days of light lure fishing. My first love is the sea but living inland that is saved for the full day sessions. I have fished many venues around the world some more

exotic than others but I still have fun on the GUC. It has almost legendary status amongst my angling friends and so often overlooked for syndicate type waters promising specimen fish with the GUC often providing superior sport. I can vouch for the canal holding probably more specimen fish that most of the surrounding waters in this area. Location is the key then finding out what time they are eating and what is on the menu ! I have done my time sitting behind baited rods with alarms set, I no longer enjoy watching a float for hours on end, I have embraced the roving lure fishing method, often ultralight and i have had some real surprises from the GUC and its backwaters this summer.

So this happened today, some of you know I have been struggling health wise over the last year and my mobility and stability not always up to my normal style of roving lure or fly fishing, after much consideration and getting over the feeling of “cheating” I did some “dirty bait” fishing today. Armed with some lobworms I set up a float outfit. I transcended back in time, and was captivated by watching a float tight against some summer lilly pads, I had forgotten the sheer delight of this type of fishing, it was divine. I caught a lot as well, including a few nice perch.

Out again, the objective being to once again test my mobility and if I can cope with fishing on my own. During my enforced absence who changed the rules ? I would not normally expect for a hot summers day with bright sunshine and boat traffic to be productive. How wrong was I ! Numerous Zeds, only one needing the net however, and lots of hand sized perch, all falling to my jig fly that matched the hundreds of perch fry.

As some of you know I have been out of action due to my ongoing health issues that restrict my mobility and I probably s...

As some of you know I have been out of action due to my ongoing health issues that restrict my mobility and I probably shouldn’t be left unsupervised around deep water ! (Given my historical record of falling in even when I was well !)
Taking all the required precautions I ventured out on the canal today, didn’t expect much with bright very warm conditions, but I was wrong, plenty of sport with Zeds and Perch. I came across a huge shoal of roach and a change to the tiny paddle tails on a size 16 with a small split shot and I managed to tempt a few. An absolute delight ☀️

A very difficult session, but did manage to get a few. Had to scale down to small black jig fly to tempt them. Spent 20 mins casting at a big leaf trying to induce a take, at that point decided it was time to call it a day.

This one looks a grumpy as me !A good number of hours for a few wasps. A dry mild autumnal day was a bonus.

This Friday for me is an end of an era, those of you who fished the east coast around Walton on Naze will know, Metcalf’s closes its doors for the final time.
Through the late 1960’s and through the 1970’s it was my summer haunt, fascinated by the stories I hung around the shop longing to be part of the community.
John Metcalf, proprietor at that time became a good friend of my grandfather, as a result of taking me to buy a new pier rod.
That led to me being welcome in the shop at any time, I looked in awe at the glass case containing a huge bass caught from Walton Pier.
A part of my past …. Such fond memories.

Managed the MK “predator grand-slam” today.

Topped off with a cracking Perch and a nice Zander. A small jack completed the “slam”.
