Team Feature: John Cronin

John is a 1st Dan Black Belt and part of our assistant team who will be assisting at our Saturday juniors and fight club.

John’s martial arts journey has not been easy. In 2004, he was involved in a car accident resulting in three weeks in hospital and around four months in a wheelchair, he was told that if he ever walked again, it would probably be with a stick. He has had around around 15 operations and complications from his injuries.

He pushed hard to get out of the wheelchair, gradually learned to walk without assistance and, remarkably, ran a half marathon in 2005!

John started training with our former association ECKA in 2006 and went on to achieve his 1st Dan Black Belt in 2011. In fact, John and Sensei Jo trained together in Milton Keynes many years ago, making his return to training with LBKA and becoming part of the coaching team a full-circle moment. He also spent six years assisting with teaching at Sensei Lauren’s club before returning to train with LBKA.

He competed all over the UK, including winning the WCKA Open in Wales, and also fought full contact twice. His knee injuries eventually brought his competitive fighting career to an end.

Outside of martial arts, John enjoys weights and HIIT training, and took up cycling in 2015. He has since completed numerous 100-mile rides, often raising money for charities.

This is the club value John feels represents him best is definitely Perseverance.

Someone asked recently: "What is the difference between our Women & Girls Class and the mixed classes?"

Same techniques.
Same syllabus.
Same challenge.
Same standards.

Women do not need a different version.

We teach kickboxing. Properly. Nothing taken away.

The difference?

It's just a room full of women.

TEAM FEATURE | Tommy

Tommy started training with us at 6 years old and has now been part of the club for over a decade. He is a 1st Dan Black Belt and part of our cadet assistant team.

The best part of coaching for Tommy is when he see's students use techniques in partner work and sparring with real accuracy, particularly when it's a technique they originally struggled to grasp.

His least favourite technique is the straight-leg roundhouse kick but can teach it well still and favourite is turning side kick!

Outside of kickboxing, Tommy is Grade 5 on piano and has also been a representative at the local Youth Parliament for the last two and a half years including being involved in campaigns around va**ng and Votes at 16, met MPs and even worked on a social media campaign with the NHS! So is helping young people both in and outside the club.

Of our club values, solidarity is the one Tommy feels represents him best.

The journey comes full circle.

Here is one of our fantastic coaching assistants (and we have many!) who started off as a young student himself over a decade ago, now passing his knowledge on.

This is one of the most wonderful things we get to see in the club..and maybe one of these young Little Buzzards members will go on to do the same :)

Think kickboxing is just people trying to knock your head off?

It isn't.

Most of our members started as complete beginners. Training is controlled, supportive and designed to help you improve.

Yeah it takes effort but it's worth it ;)

No egos. No pressure. Just good people and great coaching.
