CUP WINNERS! The Girls capped off an incredible first season by claiming the Divisional Cup to complete a league/cup double
We travelled down to Chadderton FC who were kindly hosting the final and with every player turning up on time for once, you could tell we were up for it.
We were a bit outnumbered in support considering we travelled from almost an hour away, but those that did come down it was really appreciated and we heard the shouting, and a little bit of singing!
Before the game began, we were presented with our trophy and medals for winning the title, this was a great occasion for the girls. However, maybe it did cause a small issue for us in terms of concentration.
Gemma in net. A back 3 of Keeley, Charlotte and Amber (C). Marnie and Izzy anchoring the midfield with Kathryn just ahead. Shannon Left Wing with Katie on the Right. Vicky, Zoe and Clem began on the bench.
The game kicked off and Reddish North End started like a train. They ran more, they battled more and they played some brilliant football. They deservedly took the lead just 7 mins in with a smart finish into the bottom corner.
Sevenbrooks looked completely lost... there was no communication, constant panic and just a sense of bewilderment. We could not complete a simple pass to save our lives. However, whilst our girls had a shocker to begin, credit must go to Reddish because they genuinely played excellently and forced countless errors.
Reddish had a couple more chances to extend their lead and they will likely regret that they couldn't take advantage in this period.
Our only threat in that first 20 was from our own goalkicks. Amber had been under the weather for the past few weeks but somehow had developed a stronger kick. She managed to put our strikers through multiple times, Katie and Kathryn having chances but well stopped by the opposing keeper.
Clementine was our first substitute and we really needed her to get the team going with her positivity, there was a reason she was vice captain despite this being her first year with the team.
The first time we looked to have any composure came on the 22nd minute and it was right back Keeley who slalomed between 3 confidently before finding Katie who unforunately shanked her cross.
Sevenbrooks began to relax and show that they are a good side. Some nice passing down the right resulted in Katie getting space on the wing. Her first cross was blocked, but she took her time to provide another on the rebound towards the back post. Shannon was in the right spot and fired first time into the roof of the net. Pressure relieved , you could see it in the girls faces.
From this point on the game was completely dominated by Sevenbrooks and just before the break we took the lead after an excellent run by Kathryn led to her finishing calmly to give us a slender lead.
The girls knew themselves that they had played poorly and out of character. However. they vowed to put it right in the second half and thats absolutely what they did.
Reddish had a crack straight from kick off. A fantastic strike from the half way line almost caught us cold but Gemma was alert to tip it round the post.
Vicky had come on for Izzy and immediately she was making her stamp on the game winning countless tackles in the midfield whilst recycling the ball efficiently.
We extended our lead to 3-1 when Katie broke down the right. She slipped Kathryn through, who knocked it past the keeper leading to Shannon to convert into an empty net.
Kathryn would then make it 4 almost immediately after a smart throw from Amber put her clean through and she beat the keeper once more with her weak foot.
Zoe then joined the action from the bench replacing a slightly injured Keeley. Zoe has had an superb first season in football considering she's never played, she was immediately into the action with her trade mark strong tackling. She is pictured with a thoroughly deserved POTM for last week.
At this point the game felt over but Sevenbrooks refused to slow down and it was Kathryn once more to complete another hattrick. This time an unfortunate error by the keeper who passed it straight to Kathryn who had the easy task to make it 5. This ensured she maintained her incredible 3 goal a game average for the season and reinforced the crowd chants of 'She scores when she wants, Kathryn Goble she scores when she wants'
Shannon then followed suit to complete her hattrick and it was once again a backpost conversion to make it 6.
Marnie and Izzy both came back on. Marnie was deployed a bit further forward to show her eye for a pass whilst Izzy rejoined the midfield and immediately showed her qualities to break up play and get us on the front foot.
We should of had a 7th when Amber got on the end of corner at the back stick, her volley clearly crossed the line as it rippled the internal side netting. Somehow the referee and linesman decided it hadn't crossed, a very confusing moment.
Charlotte then went up for our next corner and met the ball perfectly, her header crashed the underside of the bar and was so unlucky not to bounce in.
We would eventually make it 7 with the goal of the game. A nice move out from the back found Shannon in the centre, she went past a couple moving inside before Cruyff turning back to the right. She then fed Katie who raced to the byline before turning back to lay Shannon off 20 yards out and she applied a cultured first time strike into the far bottom corner kissing the post on the way in.
Reddish then had a few chances themselves which really highlighted their spirit. Despite the scoreline they kept going and it was another superb strike by their forward which required a cat like save from Gemma who was at full stretch. It was as if time stood still as none of our defenders reacted, and reddish had another go from the rebound - which once again was excellently saved by Gemma who tipped it round the post.
Our final goal of the campaign would be from Clem. Vicky did some good work in the midfield and it fell kindly to Clem to tap home confidently to the delight of our fans. She has a knack of always being in the right spot and is beginning to add the goals to her game that we knew was inevitable.
POTM went to Shannon Roberts who was a constant threat through out. The equaliser was absolutely vital and she took her goals calmly when it mattered, whilst also constantly harrassing in her defensive duties.
Massive credit to all the girls for ensuring they didn't end the season disappointed after a rough start. Thanks to MWFL and Andy May in particular for the excellent organisation of the competition throughout the season, and for making the final a special occasion for all involved.
Further credit to Reddish who we have played 3 times this season and have given us a harder game each time, today in particular they were excellent in parts. We wish them the best of luck next season.
Also special mention to those who sadly couldn't make it to the final. Shannon McDonald, Laura Amadee, Abi Bielby, Rachel Rigby and Jade Almond - You all have played a major part in this seasons success.
Thanks to Tony, Paul and the rest of the Sevenbrooks management team for their support. We look forward to returning it in your cup final later this month.
Our latest sponsors D.Woodhead & Son we appreciate you too!
Probably some more photos to come when MWFL release their shots! For now enjoy the amateur photographers!
