Finally, in our summary of Ryoshin Karate's community engagement work, the priority of our funded activity in 2024-26 has been societal issues relating to men and boys.

Using Goju Karate training, we positively addressed the issues of alienation and dissatisfaction that commonly afflict males in modern day society. We have used our training to reach and influence males of all ages, emphasising the benefits of self-discipline, respect and cooperation within our target group.

We did this as the main thrust of our strategy, whilst also maintaining previous work on increased female participation and disability empowement.

In doing so, we have established a solid base of innovative community engagement/cohesion work that we will continue to progress in future. Moreover, we have increased our membership, contacts and partnerships and changed lives for the better as a result of our work.

Many thanks to our partners in delivering the project and the community lottery fund for financially supporting the initiative in 2024-26.

Attached below is a selection of images relating to our work over that period.

Today is the 138th anniversary (25 April 1888) of the birth of Chojun Myiagi, the founder of the Goju (hard-soft) style practised by Ryoshin Karate Club.

Master Myiagi is one of the legendary foundational figures of modern karate, and on this anniversary, we remember his unique contribution to traditional martial arts both in Okinawa & Japan and internationally.

Another key area where Ryoshin has engaged with specific societal groups is via disability inclusion. In 2024-26, we partnered with two local disability organisations to facilitate outreach access to disabled adults.

As a result of this work, we trained x2 tranches of disabled people in Goju Karate up to yellow and orange belt levels. This saw substantial improvements in their physical mobility, coordination skills, and self-confidence.

Of these disability students, the single greatest success was undoubtedly the progression of student Carl Mansfield (Autistic spectrum) in his Karate education. Carl, pictured (left) with Sempai Adrian Wilson in the attached image, has gained his blue belt and, in doing so, integrated into the main Ryoshin Ellenbrook Dojo

Congratulations to Carl for his achievements and becoming a permanent and valued member of Ryoshin Karate Club.

In recent years, Ryoshin Karate has undertaken an enormous amount of targeted developmental work with specific groups. This has explicitly included boosting the participation of girls and young women.

In the attached image, Sempai Annie Finnigan (left) is pictured with three of the club's most promising young female students, namely Diana, Jessica, and Anna (left to right).

With this type of young talent training at the Club, Ryoshin's future is assured. As is our ongoing and enduring commitment to the increased participation of female students.

Karate requires dedication, hard work and self-discipline. To excel it also calls for power/strength, technical ability, and good coordination skills. And we use training in the dojo to develop and refine these latter three crucial qualities.

It is a serious discipline, but it does not (and should not) preclude having fun. The fun aspect is important to all club members, but it is especially important for the youngsters.

In the attached image (Monday, 2 February 2026), we see some early arrivers for that evening's class striking a pose or two for the camera.

Those are definitely images for posterity and the Ryoshin instagram account!
