Trying to decide which yoga class to book? It helps to think about what you’re actually looking for.
Yin might appeal if you want to spend more time in stretches, explore your range of movement and practise being still. Those long holds can be challenging, both physically and mentally.
Ashtanga might suit you if you like structure, repetition and a physically demanding practice. Following the same sequences gives you the opportunity to notice how your strength, mobility and confidence develop over time.
Vinyasa might be your thing if you enjoy variety, flowing between postures and working on strength, balance and mobility. Classes can be very different depending on the teacher.
And what about the breath, stress or simply feeling better mentally?
Those aren’t exclusive to any particular style. Breath is important in all three, and people can find mental and emotional benefits in very different types of practice.
You might want more strength, more flexibility, a bit of headspace or just an hour doing something you enjoy.
There’s no single right choice. And you don’t have to stick to one.
Personally, I think finding a teacher whose approach you enjoy matters just as much as the name on the timetable.
Which style do you enjoy most, and why?
