A double win weekend!
The First XI for the second week in a row faced a top of the table clash, this time away to Hampsthwaite.
With rain in the forecast, we won the toss and chose to bowl. We knew that the key wicket was their opening batter. He set off well, hitting the boundary with regular aggresive shots. When the rain came we lost 7 overs in the first break and 3 more overs in the second delay of the innings leaving 30 overs.
Hampsthwaite attacked looking to push the score along but tight bowling from Alfie Robinson and Tom Garton in difficult conditions with wet ball ensured we kept them to an achievable target of 175. Looking to get that final batting point, we managed to pick up our only bowling point with a direct run out from Dwyer off the last ball of the innings.
With the bat a change at the top of the order saw Nick Robinson open with Dwyer. Dwyer got off to a fast start, timing the ball well, on a wet outfield that saw the ball slow up just before the rope on a number of occasions. Robinson found his flow and both pushed the score along , finding the boundary frequently and also picking up the singles.
Dwyer finally fell for 56 with the score on 116. A flurry of quick wickets slowed progress, but Robinson passed 50 and then remained steadfast as Dexter joined him to hit the winning runs.
This Victory keeps us top of the table, 31 points clear of second place. Promotion and possibly the title can be sealed next weekend at home. 10 points are required to gain promotion and depening on results next weekend as Spofforth and Hampsthwaite play each other, the title could be decided too.
The Second XI welcomed Rainton to the lane. They somehow avoided the rain to restrict Rainton to 167-3 from 40 overs. Very tight bowling from skipper Bower, Darren Bowes and Ellis Jones ensured a target was well within reach.
Skipper and Vice skipper, strode to the middle with purpose and proceeded to get the scoreboard moving. Ireland the aggresor, making 62 off just 52 balls in a partnership of 126. When he fell, Bower ensured victory soon followed finishing 71*
Victory keeps us in 6th place with 3 games to go.
