Lajos Sovago (1952 - 2026)

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that former Leeds Head Coach Lajos Sovago died on Saturday 3rd October, aged 73, after a short illness.

Lajos joined the club from Hungary in 1990, where he had been a National Coach. He built a Men's Artistic programme that helped shape the way gymnastics training was done in Leeds and across the UK. He coached gymnasts to the Olympic Games, World and European Championships, was one of the founders of the Yorkshire Open, and was a respected international judge.

When he left in 2012, he left behind a team of gymnasts turned coaches who believed they could produce athletes capable of competing not just on the world stage, but at its very pinnacle.

Our thoughts are with his wife Eva, his son Szabolcs, and everyone who knew and trained with him. Funeral details will be shared once known.

Rest in peace, Lajos. Your legacy lives on in Leeds.
