The second edition of the Alwoodley Hole Series takes us to the 3rd.

At 514 yards, this par five offers no completely comfortable side from the tee. New bunkering places greater demands on the line down the left, while the heather waits to catch anything moving too far right.

Finding the fairway is only the beginning, with its rig-and-furrow contours rarely providing a perfectly level stance.

Where do you aim from the tee?

Introducing the Alwoodley Hole Series: a closer look at the decisions that shape a round on the course.

We begin with the 13th. Playing into the prevailing wind, the line from the tee can determine the difficulty of everything that follows. Challenge the bunkers on the left and the approach begins to open up; allow the ball to move right and the heather quickly enters the picture.

How do you play the 13th?

This medium-length par-4 unfolds into the distance with all its features in clear view from the tee. A generous fairway awaits and a good drive will bring the large green, that slopes towards the player, into comfortable range.

It is tempting to err right with the drive but if you are brave enough to hug the left, the approach does become easier. Should your second shot finish beyond the pin, it will leave a speedy opening putt that can catch the unwary out.
