Competition in Tennis- can we help tennis be better than 4%!
A recent Mytenniscoaching podcast revealed the latest LTA figures on tennis participation and competition.
4m (million) children play tennis in the UK annually, between ages 4 to 16.
1.8m play tennis monthly and 0.8m play weekly, this is thought to be regular tennis lessons.
Tennis would therefore appear to be in a very healthy position in terms of participation.
The LTA Tournament website shows 32,500 competitive tennis players in the UK, so roughly 4% of those taking lessons, less than 1% of the 4m. To qualify this figure slightly the data relates to ages 9-16 (4-8 years old are not included) so the number may be slightly higher but probably not by much.
By comparison 5m children play football annually.
The major difference comes in the competition statistics where football has 1.8m regular match players, taking it to 36%, so somewhat better than tennis at 1% or at best 4%.
At Optimal Tennis we strive to place competition and playing the game of tennis at the heart of our coaching programme in a number of ways.
We have extended many of our classes from 60 minutes to 90 minutes to give children more time to play points and matches.
The progression through our system aims to be:
School Tennis - Group Tennis – Internal Competitions – Team Tennis – LTA Graded Events
We now have 7 teams and hoping to increase this in future years, U8, U9, U10, U11 Boys, U11 Girls, U12 boys, U14 boys.
We have 2 upcoming tournaments:
Saturday 20th June – Family Doubles Tournament – ideal first competition for young players
Saturday 4th July – Optimal End of Season Singles Competition
If you would like to get involved in any of these competitions, or would like to discuss your child competing in tennis, please email [email protected] or phone John on 07896636173.
We also encourage children to step into LTA graded competitions. This can be daunting at first as children playing in these often have considerable experience and play regularly. A suggested approach is if we can get a ‘mini team’ of 3 or 4 players to go together, they can encourage and support each other and embrace the experience together.
LTA graded competitions are the gateway to county and national tennis and are a great challenge to anyone wanting to challenge themselves.
The LTA website has filters allowing searches of tournaments within a set radius (eg 25 or 50 miles) as well as the grade of tournament. Grade 1 is the highest level, grade 6 and 7 are the lowest grade so a suggested starting point.
