Hole 16 at Sand Moor is a long, demanding par 5. A tee shot favouring the left side of the fairway is ideal, taking the gorse on the right out of play for longer hitters.
A well-placed ditch narrows the fairway further up, meaning any lay-up must be struck with precision and care.
The approach plays uphill to a well-protected green, with significant run-off areas punishing anything less than accurate. On this hole, a 5 is always a good score.

At Sand Moor Golf Club, 1983 marked a defining moment. The £60,000 Car Care Plan International brought the spotlight firmly onto the course, confirming its status as a true championship test.

Significant changes were made to prepare for the occasion: the 1st shortened into a par 4, new tees introduced, and the 18th adjusted to meet professional standards. Despite concerns over early-season conditions, the course passed inspection with flying colours.
The field was world-class. Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle, Tony Jacklin, Ian Woosnam and more teed it up, with Faldo ultimately claiming victory.

Played on this day in 1983 — a fitting moment to reflect as Sand Moor celebrates its centenary year.

The 5th at Sand Moor measures 352 yards from the back tees, playing slightly uphill. Much of the challenge lies in the approach, often struck from an upslope to a narrow, sloping green. Bunkers guard the front right, while a runoff to the left punishes anything drifting offline, placing a premium on accuracy.

Distance control is equally critical. With the green falling sharply from back to front, any shot that finishes beyond the pin leaves a nervy, downhill putt.
