Brady, Milo & Ted enjoying an afternoon tootle ๐Ÿ˜

All 3 looking fabulous through continuous movement and constant access to forage 24/7 ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŽ

Shout out to Hannah from Meaux Track Livery - MTL who wrote a great post about the difference between 'Ad-lib' hay & 'Constant access' to hay ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ

I haven't used the term 'Ad-lib' since!

Finding the calm to receive the answer that is already there...๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ

I was on a long flight, sandwiched between an older woman and a younger woman.
The older woman, seated by the window, was fussing with her phone and becoming visibly frustrated. I asked if she needed help.

โ€œMy headphones wonโ€™t connect,โ€ she said. โ€œI downloaded movies for the flight, but I canโ€™t hear any of them.โ€

I took a look at her phone, checked the settings, and made sure everything appeared to be connected properly. Satisfied, I handed it back to her.

โ€œIt still isnโ€™t working,โ€ she said.
Now she was becoming increasingly upset. The prospect of spending the next five hours without her movies seemed to be creating genuine anxiety.

I was puzzled. Everything I had done should have worked.
The younger woman in the aisle seat perked up and offered to help.
โ€œI work in tech support,โ€ she said.

She took the phone, checked a few things, and then handed it back to the older woman with exactly the same result.

She took the womanโ€™s headphones from her, handed back the phone, and said, โ€œThis should work now. But I need you to put the headphones in very slowly and carefully.โ€

The woman nodded and did exactly as instructed.
This time, it worked.

Within moments she was happily watching her movie.

Once she was settled, I asked the younger woman what she had done differently.

โ€œNothing,โ€ she said.
โ€œI did the exact same thing you did. But when she was anxious, she kept jamming the headphones into her ears and accidentally pressing the mute button. I just needed to slow her down.โ€
Then she winked and added:
โ€œNinety percent of tech support is keeping the client calm.โ€

That comment struck me harder than she probably intended.

As riding instructors, trainers, coaches, and teachers, we often assume our job is to provide solutions. We spend years accumulating knowledge, building skills, and collecting answers.
But a panicked rider can find nine hundred problems for every one solution.

Often the solution is surprisingly simple:

The horse needs a clearer rhythm.
The rider needs to breathe.
The hands need to soften.
The rider needs to look up.
The horse needs more forward.
Simple things.

But anxiety has a remarkable ability to press the mute button on good information.

When people become overwhelmed, they stop hearing. They stop feeling. They stop processing. In their effort to solve the problem, they unknowingly recreate it over and over again.
Iโ€™ve found that some of the most effective teaching doesnโ€™t come from knowing more answers. It comes from helping someone become calm enough to receive the answer that is already there.
The solution may be simple.

It may even be free.
But no solution can land on anxious ears.
Sometimes the first step in helping someone isnโ€™t fixing the problem.
Itโ€™s helping them stop pressing mute.

What do you do with your Nettles???

Here's the smallest member of our herd, Sidney B, enjoying some wilted ones that i prepared earlier ๐ŸŒฟ

We have a few different areas on our track where they grow so I cut them down in stages for the herd to forage and eat without it being to much all in one go.

When it's dry I leave them on the ground but when its wet and muddy, I put them into the hay boxes.

๐ŸŒฟ Nettles are highly nutrional and contain a broad range of vitamins and minerals.

๐ŸŒฟ They can help regulate blood sugar.

๐ŸŒฟ Known to support the immune system for those with allergies, so good for the pollen sufferers.

๐ŸŒฟ Support the urinary tract in maintaining good urinary health.

๐ŸŒฟ They have been recognised for providing important nutrients to feet as well alleviating inflamation in arthritic joints which makes it ideal for helping older horses or those in need of joint support.

๐ŸŒฟ They contain antioxidants and oils that are known for promoting healthy skin & coat.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Fresh clean water is ALWAYS available.

Last week we had a First ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŽ๐Ÿซฃ

Whilst Rory was fully embracing what it feels like to run free around the bottom, biggest loop of our track, doing a pretty good job of keeping up with Little Sid, he spooked at the water feature (big puddle), jumped and bucked sideways, ending up in the hay field, taking down the top line of fencing ๐Ÿ˜ณ

The look on his face was like he'd just jumped into Narnia, going from being on the track one second and then into a Meadow the next!

It didn't take him long to take full advantage and sample this years hay crop before being brought out, back onto the track, where he continued to run freely around the track. We were about to intervene and call it a day for Rory and his time on the track when it ended naturally. He underestimated just how agile Little Sid is and that was our moment to step in and take Rory back to his section of the track to rest, recharge and process his day meeting friends.

Thanks to our fencing and the way we have it set up, Rory came out of this unscathed because when Rory leaped for the sky, the top line of fencing released and went with him, which is what it is meant to do. It did this because we use Stainless Steel connectors, tight enough to secure the rope in place but loose enough to give under pressure.

We do use Litzclip Safety Links but what I have learnt over the years is that when the buttons go and they give way, they don't completely release and will only loosen so far, which for Rory it would not have been enough in this instance.

Making sure you are providing the safest possible environment to minimise risk and injury is so important. When I was designing our track I spent hours researching fencing and all of the different connectors and accessories. I could have saved some money and removed a few items from the basket but this is one example of where no expense should be spared.

Oh, and please, please, please, do not tie knots to secure and/or join your fencing as these will not give way when needed!

Photo of Rory, in the hay field, sampling a big mouthful of this years crop. He was pleased to let his friends know that it is going to be a very tasty one ๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒพ

You can lead a horse to water...
Or in my case, my horse leads me to water ๐Ÿคฃ

I was trying to get a nice video of how beautiful the woods is with the sound of the birds singing in the background but Duke had other ideas ๐Ÿ’ฆ

The full track is now open again and so far so good!

Look at Ted being all brave & confident with our newbie Rory ๐Ÿฅน

This really is such huge progress for Ted!
Not only did he approach and instigate this, but he did it all on his own without brother Brady by his side.
I'm so so proud of him...Go Ted ๐Ÿ–ค

My 'Birthday Girl' Rose Bushes are coming on!

I don't think I have ever seen such beautiful roses!
Its like there's two in one, and the bee's and butterflies are loving them ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿฆ‹

We don't just think about the benefits for horses here! We think about all creatures great & small, and how we, as a family, can create the best environment possible for all who live on the land with us!

Just listen to the birds in the background ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿฆ๐ŸŽถ

The more time I spend observing our beautiful herd, the more I see how much we can learn from them!

Horses donโ€™t just live together, eating side by side, they form deep soul connections and long lasting bonds. They know their friends, they understand each other and seek them out for many reasons. To go for a drink, to play, to rest, to investigate together or mooch about.
It isn't just about safety, it's about connection!

There's comfort in knowing someone is always nearby. Watching, listening, understanding without words and in a world that moves fast, they remind me more and more what true connection and loyalty really looks like.

Life doesn't need to be loud, hard work or complicated.
It just needs us to be present, to trust and be patient with others and ourselves. Listening to understand, not just to reply, and holding space when needed and allowing yourself to be held when you need it.

Thereโ€™s strength in togetherness, in loyalty, in being there for one another. Life gets busy and life paths change, and that's ok but if there's one thing these horses have shown me, it's that weโ€™re not meant to do life alone!

You probably can't see them but there's bee's buzzing around in this little meadow patch and they're not alone either ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ

To think I nearly didn't build our track to include access to these hedges because I wanted a track around it for myself ๐Ÿซฃ

The night before we were due to put the fence posts in, something told me I needed to change it so I got my drawings out and redesigned it ready for a 6am start.
Now every time I see the horses browsing the hedges, I am reminded of that night and how glad I am that I listened to my intuition โœจ๏ธ

Browsing is something we see all year round because there is always something interesting for them to seek out. It isn't just about meeting their nutritional needs, browsing is mentally stimulating and a key part to their wellbeing.

Browsing has it's physical benefits too. Reaching for different foods at different heights improves their physical health by giving them the opportunity to explore different ranges of motion through their joints and encouraging different weight bearing positions.

When they are browsing at ground level they are stretching their neck and back muscles, and when they are reaching up browsing the trees and hedges, like Paddy and Henry are doing here, they are putting more weight over the hind limbs, both helping to improve their overall physical health, and strength, in a more natural way ๐ŸŽ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ๐ŸŽ
