My smart scales said I was obese this morning!!! Now I know I’m still carrying a little holiday weight but obese? Really?
Most smart scales depend largely on BMI and bioelectrical impedance, two measurements that are, at best, very rough estimates.
BMI doesn’t know the difference between muscle, fat, bone density, or even water retention. If you lift weights, have a naturally denser build, are tall, or are simply holding onto extra water, BMI can flag you as “overweight” or “obese” while your actual health markers are perfectly fine.
Bioelectrical impedance is just as shaky. Hydration, salt intake, time of day, hormones, recent exercise, and even whether you’ve had a coffee can skew the result. One glass of water can “add” body fat. One hard workout can “remove” it.
More importantly health isn’t a single number and there are better indicators of health.
Smart scales can be useful but please do not treat a single reading as truth! This is how people end up discouraged.
If the mirror, your clothes, your performance etc say you’re healthy, a bathroom scale doesn’t get the final vote!
