DAY 18/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

Back home. Back in the gym. Back to normality
 hopefully 😂

Rome, cancelled flights, extra accommodation and then Manchester to watch Laura become a World Champion. It’s been quite a couple of weeks.

Today: 60 minutes on the BikeErg. Just under 28km without actually going anywhere
which makes a nice change 😂

Training has fitted around life lately. Different locations, different sessions, making use of what’s available.

It hasn’t looked exactly like the plan, but it hasn’t needed to be a complete write-off either.

Now it’s about settling back into a routine. No punishment sessions to “make up” for being away. Just picking up the plan and getting on with it.

Plenty of work ahead. Good to be back ✌

WORLD CHAMPION. 🌍🏆

I genuinely don’t know how to put into words what I’ve just watched.

Laura Higgins is the AWPC WORLD POWERLIFTING CHAMPION.

đŸ„‡ Masters 2 - 82.5kg World Champion

And she didn’t just win

She produced:

🌍 150kg Squat - WORLD RECORD
🌍 80kg Bench Press - WORLD RECORD
🌍 150kg Deadlift - WORLD RECORD
🌍 380kg Total - WORLD RECORD

Four World Records. One World Championship.

Laura
what the hell have you just done?!

I’ve watched this woman transform in front of me.

Not just physically.

I’ve watched her confidence grow.

I’ve watched her discover just how strong she actually is.

I’ve watched her walk into sessions and quietly get on with the work, week after week, always asking what she can do better.

And today I got to stand in Manchester and watch all of that work culminate in becoming

THE BEST IN THE WORLD.

There are moments as a coach that you know you’re going to remember for the rest of your life.

This is one of mine.

I’ve coached people to PBs. I’ve helped people change their lives. I’ve watched people achieve things they once thought were impossible.

But watching someone you’ve coached step onto a world stage and become WORLD CHAMPION?

That’s the pinnacle of my coaching career so far.

And the most incredible part?

Laura only started training with me in September 2023.

At 45 years old, in her first competitive season, she’s gone from discovering powerlifting to:

🇬🇧 British Champion
đŸ‡ȘđŸ‡ș European Champion
🌍 WORLD CHAMPION

Read that again.

Because if that doesn’t prove that it’s never too late to discover what you’re capable of, I don’t know what will.

Laura, I am in absolute awe of you.

Your strength is incredible.

But it’s your determination, consistency, courage and willingness to keep pushing the boundaries of what you believe you’re capable of that makes me so bloody proud to call myself your coach.

Today was yours.

Every heavy session.

Every rep.

Every doubt you’ve pushed through.

You earned this.

I couldn’t be prouder of you.

And I’ll never forget being there to watch you do it.

DAY 16/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

90 minutes on the ergs this morning before travelling to Manchester.

Barely unpacked from Rome and we’re off again 😂 travelling with my little partner in crime..,

Training fitted in early, because tomorrow I get to watch Laura Higgins compete at the A/WPC World Championships.

One of the best parts of coaching is seeing someone take the work they’ve put in week after week and bring it to the platform.

I’ve seen how much Laura has put into this. Getting to be there to support her means a lot.

My own HYROX prep keeps ticking along around it all. Today that meant making use of the morning before getting on the road.

Tomorrow, it’s Laura’s time to shine.

Let’s go, Laura đŸ’Ș❀

To all the mums and dads trying to balance a family, work, responsibilities AND somehow find the time to look after themselves

I see you.

Sometimes training happens at 6am.

Sometimes it’s squeezed into 45 minutes between responsibilities.

Sometimes the kids come with us.

Sometimes we’re exhausted and the absolute last thing we want to do is train.

We’re not professional athletes.

Nobody is paying us to recover.

We don’t get to organise our lives around our training.

We organise our training around our lives.

And I think there’s something pretty bloody special about that.

Because maybe the dream isn’t becoming an elite athlete anymore.

Maybe it’s being 50 and still racing.

60 and still lifting.

70 and still running around with the grandkids.

Maybe it’s showing our children that looking after your body isn’t punishment

It’s a privilege.

I still want to race.

I still want PBs.

I still want to find out just how fit and strong I can become.

But there’s another reason I train now.

I want my kids to grow up remembering a Dad who could do things.

Who ran with them.

Played with them.

Went on adventures with them.

And showed them that getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop challenging yourself.

We might never be our kids’ favourite athlete.

But we can keep training to be their superhero. ❀

DAY 14/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

Honestly, didn’t know what to post today 😂

But that’s a bit like training. Sometimes there’s nothing exciting to report.

Today was 50 minutes on the bike in Z1/2. Nothing to write home about, but still an important part of the bigger picture.

No PB. No savage finisher. No dramatic story. Just an easy session doing its job.

Not every workout needs to leave you on the floor to count. And not every day of documenting this needs some massive revelation.

I said I’d share the whole process
that includes the ordinary days.

Two weeks in. Today’s update: rode a bike, kept it easy. That’s it 😂

YOUR WORKOUT DOESN’T HAVE TO DESTROY YOU TO WORK.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in HYROX and hybrid training:

People are absolutely addicted to suffering.

Every run has to be fast.
Every workout has to leave them on the floor.
Every HYROX session becomes a race.
Every easy day mysteriously becomes “steady”. 😂

Then they wonder why

Their legs always feel heavy.
Their running stops improving.
They’re constantly carrying niggles.
And when it’s actually time to go hard
 they’ve got nothing.

Here’s the uncomfortable bit:

Training hard is easy.

Backing off when you feel good enough to send it?

That takes discipline.

Easy sessions should feel easy.

Recovery sessions should leave you feeling BETTER than when you started.

And your hard sessions?

Those are where you earn the right to empty the tank.

You don’t get fitter by proving how tough you are every single day.

You get fitter by applying enough stress to force adaptation
then actually giving your body the opportunity to adapt.

If every day is 🔮

Eventually, none of them are.

🟱 Easy
🔮 Hard
🟱 Easy
🔮 Hard
🟱 Easy
🔮 HYROX
🟱 Easy

Simple isn’t sexy.

But it works.

Be honest: how many of your “easy” runs are actually easy? 👀 âœŒđŸ»

SOME OF THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE

DAY 13/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

A steady 10km completed this morning
butthat wasn’t the best part of today.

After around three months of scorching sunshine, Rome’s dry spell finally broke with a huge thunderstorm.

So naturally, I ran straight outside into the heavy rain with the kids. 😂

Newsflash: water is wet

The ground desperately needed it
andafter the stress, cancelled flight and chaos of the last few days, I think we needed it too.

We weren’t even supposed to still be in Rome today. But an unwanted extra day gave us one of those completely spontaneous family memories that no amount of money could buy.

This challenge is about documenting the training, but it’s also about documenting the life happening around it.

Today’s training win was another solid 10km.

Today’s real win was laughing and running through a thunderstorm with my kids.

Some of the best experiences in life really are free. ❀

DAY 12/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

Honestly, I couldn’t be arsed today.

Our flight home was cancelled, we had to find last-minute accommodation and didn’t get to bed until 2am.

I’m shattered, stressed and now we can’t get home until Friday morning. 😞

Today wasn’t the day to force another hard workout or pretend I felt motivated. After yesterday’s threshold run, that would have been completely pointless.

But I knew that sitting around feeling stressed wouldn’t help my head either.

So I went out for 50 minutes of very easy running to blow away the cobwebs.

No pace target. No performance goal. No attempt to “earn” food or prove how disciplined I am.

I just needed to move, clear my head and come back feeling slightly better than when I left.

I’m still tired. Still stressed. Still stuck in Rome.

But I do feel better.

Some days, that’s enough.

DAY 11/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

A 10km threshold session around Rome this morning before travelling home today. 🇼đŸ‡čâžĄïžđŸ‡ŹđŸ‡§

It also marks 150 consecutive days of training.

That doesn’t mean 150 days of pushing hard.

Some days have been threshold sessions, HYROX workouts and heavy strength training. Others have been gentle recovery runs, easy cycling, swimming or simply enough movement to help my body and mind feel better.

The streak has lasted because the intensity changes—not because I try to destroy myself every day.

For me, daily movement is about more than improving fitness. It gives me routine, clears my head and helps me manage everything else life throws at me.

Today was a harder one. Tomorrow will be deliberately easy after travelling. Then it’s time to settle back into normal training and continue building towards Birmingham and London.

Threshold run complete. Rome complete.
150 days and counting. ✅

Day 11/99 complete. 🔒
