🏉 LARNE RFC 14-28 LISBURN RFC

Another disappointing afternoon for the Larne men as they fell to a 28-14 defeat away to Lisburn in Championship 2 action.

Lisburn started the stronger of the two sides, using their set-piece well and eventually finding the opening score through a maul from a lineout. 7-0.

When Larne did get the ball in hand, there were clear signs of what this team can produce. The pace and width of the Larne attack caused Lisburn plenty of problems, and after a scrum, a flat pass off 10 took out multiple defenders before Jonny Farquhar powered over the line. Phil Andrews added the extras to level the scores at 7-7.

Lisburn responded with a penalty to make it 10-7, before Larne thought they had scored again. A brilliant wide break from Cameron Lamont saw him race into the corner, only for the try to be ruled out for a questionable foot in touch. Larne continued to pile on the pressure, but despite spending a sustained period on top, they couldn’t find the breakthrough.

Charlie Patterson then produced another brilliant burst from inside the Larne 22, before the ball was moved wide to Cameron Lamont once again, who came agonisingly close to finishing the move. No further points came before the break. HT 10-7.

Lisburn started the second half better and extended their lead through another penalty, 13-7.

Larne then began to pile the pressure back on, spending a long period inside the Lisburn half and giving the home side plenty to think about. Unfortunately, the attacking patterns which have produced so much for Larne previously just weren’t quite clicking, and Lisburn’s defence held firm.

Lisburn then hit back with a try from the base of a scrum to make it 20-7, leaving Larne with a mountain to climb.

The Larne men continued to fight, but silly mistakes and penalties repeatedly halted their momentum. Eventually, Steven Dickey produced an exceptional run, seemingly destined to be forced into touch, before somehow managing to get the ball out the back of his hand and inside to debutant Stewart, who finished brilliantly. 20-14.

Unfortunately, during this period of excellent play, Steven picked up an injury and required a visit to A&E for his wrist. We wish him all the very best for his recovery. 💚❤️

Another penalty from Lisburn, following another questionable decision, stretched the lead to 23-14 before a late try brought the final score to 28-14.

Another result that really stings for us, days like this are hard to swallow. There were periods where the attacking quality was there, particularly in the 1st half, but too many mistakes, pens and missed opportunities proved costly. Lisburn took their chances when they came, and Larne struggled to turn their pressure into points.

There is plenty to take away and plenty to work on. The season is still young, but the Larne men know that performances like this need to be turned into results sooner rather than later.

Final score: Lisburn 28-14 Larne

🏉 Match Report – Larne RFC vs Coleraine RFC

Championship 2 rugby returned to the Glynn yesterday as Larne welcomed Coleraine for the opening fixture of the new season. The 2 sides know eachother well having shared the pitch many times over recent year, and so this was an exciting setup for the season ahead. A real test for the Larne men.

Coleraine started on the front foot, but Larne’s defensive efforts were excellent in the early exchanges. Jamie Ross and Justin Harkin were particularly aggressive around the breakdown and in contact, helping Larne turn defence into attack. Larne’s expansive, coast-to-coast style also began to cause problems as the game settled into a tight period between the two 22s.

A Larne yellow card for repeated penalties gave Coleraine an opportunity with a man advantage, which they took through a break from their number 8. Another penalty soon followed to make it 0–10.

Then came Charlie Patterson.

From inside his own 10 metre line, Charlie collected the ball out wide, chipped over the defence and simply hit the afterburners. He beat everyone to the ball and dived on it to score an incredible try. 7–10.

And then, two minutes later, he did it again. Charlie squared up his defender, chipped over the top and raced through to score once more from deep. The conversion was missed, but Larne had turned the game around to 12–10.

A penalty just before half-time put Coleraine back in front at 12–13, before Larne produced another brilliant attacking passage. Jacob Swan broke away and found the lightning-fast Reese Renwick, who raced from halfway before being caught just short. Larne recycled quickly, moved the ball wide to Robbie Doey, and he finished the move off for an excellent try.

Half-time: Larne 17–13 Coleraine.

The second half proved a tougher proposition. Coleraine controlled much of the early possession before eventually forcing their way over after sustained pressure to regain the lead at 17–20.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure, with Larne matching their physicality for long periods. However, a 5-metre lineout eventually resulted in another Coleraine try, stretching the score to 17–27. A further penalty moved it to 17–30.

Larne continued to search for a way back, with Jacob Swan providing some excellent carries from deep, but some loose offloads, a drop-off in attacking sharpness and simply not having the ball prevented Larne from finding the scores they needed.

Full Time: Larne 17–30 Coleraine.

A disappointing result to open the Championship 2 campaign, particularly after the exciting rugby and fightback shown in the first half. Coleraine maintained their level throughout, while Larne couldn’t quite reproduce the same attacking threat after the break.

Plenty to take, plenty to learn and plenty of rugby still to come. The season is only just beginning.
