Late defeat on Tuesday. ⌛

Bolton would concede twice immediately after going ahead and succumb to a stoppage-time strike as they were beaten 3-2 at Sheffield United on Tuesday evening. 🌙

17 Lancaster Whites traveled to the match at Bramall Lane on Tuesday. 🚌

Saturday's match report by Alan Houghton. 📝

We all trooped down to the Toughsheet to see the Wanderers take on the fellow promoted Imps from Lincoln. The Doombar deliberations were upbeat after our defensive heroics at QPR last week and this week’s incoming transfers. Three internationals on the same bus; a Canadian, a Japanese and a Northern Ireland boosting our ranks. Also, a fond farewell to Cyrus Christie, who has seen us through some tough times. Hopes were high that another victory would add to our good start back in the Championship, arguably exceeding our initial expectations. With eleven new signings on board, Stephen Schumacher has now got the selection problems any manager would want; how to settle them all in and get the best out of them.

Samuel Iling-Junior came in on the right wing, with Gaizka Larrazabal dropping to the bench. For the first 45 minutes, we were brilliant. Lightning raids down both wings, we played some fast-flowing attacking football. What we lacked were goals as we spurned three or four good chances. Would we be made to pay for those missed chances? The answer was ‘yes’, as Lincoln came out for the second half a different team. For the first 20 minutes after half-time, they upped their game and ran the Wanderers ragged. Sure enough, they got their goal after 65 minutes. We huffed and we puffed but couldn't blow the Imps’ house down. We got a glimpse of new signing, Jayden Nelson late on and he promises to be a good attacking player. We just hope that he has got a few goals in him, as that is what is missing at the moment.

Won one, drawn one and lost one is not a bad start for a promoted team. We need time sort out our squad, but our first-half performance showed that we are heading in the right direction. The transfer window finishes on Tuesday night and most fans would like to see another striker coming in. I suspect that there may be a few outgoing as we try to balance our squad numbers. Lincoln City showed us that there will be no easy games in the Championship and that we will have to fight for every point. Games are coming up fast and furious with four matches in the next fortnight, all against tough teams. Points won’t come easy in this league and we need to go and fight for them.

Defeat to the Imps. 🔴

Ben House would score the only goal on Saturday as Lincoln City picked up their first victory in Bolton since February 1984 winning 1-0 at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. 🏟️

Saturday's match report by Alan Houghton. 📝

Back to the days of sleep deprivation, we assembled at the Toughsheet at 7:30am for the 434 miles round trip to the Matrade Loftus Road stadium to take on the current league leaders, albeit after only 1 match, Queens Park Rangers. Full English breakfast at Warwick Services, we were soon back in the old routine, arriving in good time for some pre-match refreshments. However, finding those refreshments is not easy in Shepherds Bush as we went into a local, well stocked Sports Club bar, only to be told that they did not have a licence to serve alcohol on match days! However, all was not lost as the bouncers at the Queens Tavern, let a few Wanderers fans in and we had a good chat with the locals, even meeting one QPR fan, who claimed to be a great nephew of Nat Lofthouse. Memories of Stan Bowles, Rodney Marsh and Led Zeppelin flowed and it appeared that Donald Trump is a hero down there, with his picture in a QPR shirt nestling behind the bar. We discussed our different hopes for the season with the QPR fans looking to a promotion drive, while we are looking at survival. After our excellent start last week, we were hoping for a point to keep it going.

Luca Stephenson failed to make the line up and Lewis Brunt stepped in at right back. The large Bolton contingent were well up for this one and Boy, were we needed. The Hoops were at us from the start, and we never really got going in an attacking sense. They threatened to overrun us and at times, it was like the Alamo. But we stood firm, with our defence performing heroics and Jack Bonham having the game of his life, saving us on so many occasions, that I lost count. A well-earned point in the end, which keeps our good start going.

There are going to be a lot of games like this, particularly away from home, as we get used to playing at the higher level. Our squad needs time to adapt and get used to each other. Defensively, we seem to have a lot of experience and cover. Midfield will be better, when we get our absentees back but it is up front that we are lightweight right now, with three out of four wingers inexperienced at this level. But, get better we will.

A draw at Loftus Road. 💂

Jack Bonham being Bolton's best man on Saturday as they held Queens Park Rangers to a goalless draw at Loftus Road registering their first away point in the Championship since March 2019. 📆

No transport was run on Saturday but many Lancaster Whites made there own way down to London for the fixture on Saturday. Great effort. 👏

Saturdays match report by Alan Houghton. 📝

Doombar deliberations done. Carrs’ pasty in hand. Full house at the Toughsheet. It could only mean one thing. We are back in the Championship after 7 long years. We were up against Preston North End, a team that we had not beat at home since the turn of the century. Optimism was running high as it was vital that we got off to a good start. 3 more signings this week but a note of caution was in the air as two of our midfield, Ruben Rodrigues and Xavier Simons were out because of injury and suspension respectively. Arguably they had been the best players in pre-season. Who would get the goals this season as we still look a bit lightweight up front? Stephen Schumacher brought in John McAteee and Ethan Erhahon to cover the absentees.

We went at the Lilywhites from the start and you would have thought that we were the established Championship team and they were the new boys. We tore into them and were duly rewarded in the 14th minute when Sam Dalby put away John McAtee’s parried shot. Further joy came in the 25th minute when Thierry Gale cut in from the left and curled one into the far corner. We had had the start that we could only have dreamed of before the match. We were brilliant in the first half. Preston started to get into the game towards half time and in the second half, they upped their game, as they had to. Even so, we were still creating chances until they got one back late on, setting up a tense finale. They almost equalised with virtually the last header of the match. But we held on and got the deserved three points.

One match, one win does not make a season, but it does give us a good start. Getting three points on the board early is so important as it gets us clear of the bottom group of pointless teams, who will be playing catch up. It goes without saying that belief and confidence will be sky high. But let’s keep things in perspective. There are another 45 league battles to go. We’re not finished in the transfer window yet, with more ins and outs expected. For some of our players, it is their first time in English football at this level. Our new arrivals still need time to bed in.
