ππSATURDAY'S RESULTS ROUNDUPππ
It was a day of mixed fortunes for Westgate CC as the 1st XI fell to defeat at Penrith, while the 2nd XI produced an impressive victory at Cross Hill Park.
At Tynefield Park, the 1st XI were asked to field after Penrith elected to bat and made steady progress, led by George Willan (66) and Sam Sharp (59).
Westgate fought back well, with Zak Buchanan outstanding as he claimed 6-58, supported by Lee Illingworth (2-44), restricting the hosts to 219 all out.
In reply, Westgate never fully gained momentum. Early wickets left them under pressure, and despite a solid contribution from Rory Briggs (27), regular losses halted any chase.
Sam Sharp was the standout with the ball for Penrith, taking 3-32, while Greg Hall chipped in with 4-41. Westgate were eventually dismissed for 131, falling 88 runs short.
POTM - Zak Buchanan - 6/58
However, there was much better news for the 2nd XI, who secured a convincing win over Kirkby in Furness. A disciplined bowling effort saw the visitors bowled out for 162 - a well-shared contribution across the bowling unit.
The chase was dominated by an outstanding counter attacking innings from Steven Fisher Jr, who struck 94 from 79 balls, well supported by skipper Garry Tattersall with 46. Their partnership of around 140 ensured Westgate reached 163-2 in just 27.3 overs, sealing a comfortable 8-wicket victory which ultimately, saw them qualify for the quarter finals.
POTM - Steven Fisher 94 - His maiden 50 for the club falling agonisingly short of his first 100.
Overall, a challenging afternoon for the 1st XI, but a strong and encouraging performance from the 2nd XI to round off the day.
