🥋 Dojo O'clock! ⏰️
Summer break is nearly over! Dust your dogi off! Normal training returns next week!

We’re back from Wednesday 2 September, with classes for children, teenagers and adults — from complete beginners through to experienced karateka.

Never tried karate before? September is a perfect time to start!

Trained before but somehow that “short break” became rather longer than planned? 😏 Come back. The dojo is still here!

Always great to have Chris. We warmed up with an agility course and then worked on fundamentals (it was a beginners class!) like stance work, age uke and uche uke and koshi no kaiten. I layered something more challenging on for the higher grades but kept the focus on the beginners. Kata was Heian Shodan and Bassai Dai. We then had a play with using a simple uche uke and tate shuto for joint manipulation and locks and self-defense. We finished off with simple jyu ippon and a cool down yoga flow.

So proud of these two today! 💙🥋👊🏾💥

Competing at their very first national competition, the HDKI GB Novice Female Championships, both girls gave an incredible account of themselves.

🥇 Alanna brought home 3 medals:
• Gold in Kata 🥇
• Silver in Kumite 🥈
• Bronze in the Lottery Team Kata 🥉

🥇 Alice also had an outstanding day, earning 2 medals in kata and kumite respectively:
• Silver 🥈
• Gold 🥇

An amazing achievement for both of them! Their determination, courage, and spirit on the tatami were fantastic to see. I couldn't be prouder. Well done, girls! 👏💪

A huge thank you to Chris Harrison for your support throughout the day. Without you, this simply wouldn't have been possible.

I'd also like to thank Natalie, Amanda Eden, Ray, Ashley, Roby, Maryse, Aimee Jo, Dave, and everyone else who offered their guidance, encouragement, and support both on and off the tatami. Your time, knowledge, and belief in these girls are truly appreciated, and we couldn't have done it without you.

Here's to many more competitions and memories ahead! 🥋🏆

More pictures capturing some highlights of the day to follow.

Excellent training yesterday at the HDKI Open Course and Dan Grading with Scott Langley Sensei (7th Dan).

A key theme throughout the course was the projection of energy through shomen and hanmi, explored through combinations such as sanbon tsuki, age uke–soto uke–gedan barai, and a variety of kicking sequences. Working at different distances and stance lengths, we progressed from shizentai into more dynamic movement, examining how body alignment, range, and timing influence effective technique.

The second part of the course focused on the deceptively simple combination of gedan barai and gyakuzuki, demonstrating how fundamental movements can be adapted and applied in different ways depending on distance and intent.

I particularly enjoyed how many of these ideas resonated with concepts I have been exploring elsewhere in my own karate journey. It was a valuable reminder that while styles and methods may differ, the underlying principles of effective movement, body mechanics, and energy generation often have much in common.

A thoroughly enjoyable day of learning, training, and catching up with fellow karateka from across the association.

Good luck to everyone grading today!
