Lanark Chess Club celebrated its 80th anniversary tonight. We are one of very few chess clubs in Scotland that has continuously met for that time. We had a fun and friendly 5 minute tournament and enjoyed a lovely celebratory cake.

With the 2023/24 season coming to an end we would like to provide a final Lanarkshire League update.

This season saw the club enter 2 teams into the Lanarkshire Chess League.

The 'A' Team competed well against stronger opposition in their first season returning to Division 1. Some excellent results throughout the year sees the team finish in 5th position and stay in Division 1 for next season.

The 'B' Team, competing in Division 2, also competed well also finishing 5th. Some brilliant performances from all, including some of our talented junior members.

Valuable experience, development and enjoyment for many at the club. We look forward to next season!

We wish everyone a great summer break!

This was a bit of a disappointing week for the B team.
Following a loss to an experienced Hamilton team on Monday we suffered a second loss to Stepps on Thursday.
On Monday 3 of our juniors had to concede victory to age and experience on the Hamilton side while David Edwards won his game in the match giving us a 3-1 defeat.
On Thursday a last minute withdrawal due to illness left us a board down at the start. Stepps played a strong team and both Ciaran Burns and Dave Stephens lost their games against higher graded opponents. On board 1 Max King played Ian Brownlee to a tight finish with Max leading on time before Ian managed a mate with only 1.38 minutes to go on his clock. Everyone agreed it was a good night's chess !

The club’s B team hosted a visit from quite a strong East Kilbride B team this week and did very well.

The team’s most experienced player, Dave Stephens, blundered a piece quite early on and ultimately lost the game. However, new member, Max King, and two of our juniors, Andrew McCallum and Dominic Daly, came to the rescue, all three winning their games and the match 3-1.

It is particularly nice to see our juniors come on and play well in a competitive environment. We will doubtless be seeing more of that in the coming weeks. Our thanks to coach Tom Donohue for his work with the juniors.

Monday this week saw Lanark play their first match in division 1 of the Lanarkshire League for a few years. We were at home against East Kilbride A and it was an exciting match.
East Kilbride were a man short and forfeited board four giving Lanark a one point start.
On board three Lanark’s Richard Smart lost, levelling the scores in the match.
On boards 1 and 2 both Alexander Bond and Jim Smalls ended up in serious time trouble. In a pulsating finish Alexander forced a draw with just over a minute of his time left and Jim also secured a draw, but with only 2 seconds of his time left!
That made the final result 2-2.
