Kirrie Thistle Amateur Football Club, based in Kirriemuir, has recently joined the Dundee Saturday Morning Football League (DSMFL), where they will compete in the Second Division. The club plays its home matches at Martin Park and comes off a period of strong success in the Midlands League. Managed by Kieran Dunn and supported by coaches Craig Stewart and former manager George Ingram, Kirrie Thistle boasts a dedicated team both on and off the pitch. Club Secretary Steve McIntosh ensures smooth club operations. With a proud local heritage and an ambitious outlook, Kirrie Thistle AFC is eager to build on past achievements and make their mark in the DSML.

🔷🔹 Kirrie Thistle AFC 0-1 Castlemill Athletic AFC 🔹🔷

Kirrie Thistle were back in action in the league against opponents Castlemill Athletic. Another strong opponent who has already registered a win in the league, Kirrie however still looking for theirs.

The match started and a good tempo was set from the off. Some nice passing was displayed and a couple early chances came Kirrie’s way but no goals to follow.

Fifteen minutes in, Castlemill took the lead. A play up the middle seen their midfielder run through onto the edge of the box and released a strike low into the bottom right corner. 0-1.

Although losing the goal, Kirrie applied themselves well and continued to work hard throughout the half and still created chances for themselves. Unfortunately nothing arose and the half time whistle blew.

The second half went underway and Kirrie went out chasing the equalising goal. Some more good chances came their way but Castlemill dug deep and managed to keep their lead alive. A few chances would then come their way but the Kirrie defence proved more than equal to them.

Substitutions were made throughout the half in order to keep the momentum going. A continuous battle was shown throughout the second half from Kirrie as they beared closer and closer to bringing the scores level. The team fell short in getting the ball into the goal and the referee blew for full time.

Another tough loss but again plenty of positives to take away from the game. Some fantastic hard work shown by all and that will look to continue into next week.

Credit to Castlemill as they got the job over the line and we wish them the best for the season. We would also like to wish their striker a speedy recovery after taking a nasty knee injury during the game.

🔷🔹 Kirrie Thistle AFC 0-1 Lochee United AFC 🔹🔷

Kirrie Thistle hosted Lochee United in the first round of the North of Tay Scottish Cup. Lochee are a team who are undoubtedly one of the best teams at this level of football so Kirrie knew that a very tough challenge was ahead.

The first half went underway and Kirrie set up with a good structure and a no nonsense attitude. Recent weeks have shown that playing needlessly out from the back had been costly in losing goals so a simple approach to relieve the pressure was to look long and play into the corners.

Lochee had some very good football displayed themselves and a fair few chances came their way also. The Kirrie backline of Davie, Smith and Soave reacted well however and won their battles respectively. Milligan also producing some good saves at times to keep the travelling side at bay.

Half time approached and both teams went in for their team talk and drinks break. The message from the coaches to the home side was simple, keep playing how they were and take any chances they can. Once delivered, they went back out looking to take the game to their opponents again.

The effort and work rate from the first half carried on and Kirrie managed to create some decent chances. Lochee’s defence proved strong however and their goalkeeper did well when called upon too.

Even though Kirrie slowly applied more pressure with each attack they had, it was Lochee that broke the deadlock in the last couple minutes of the game. Heartbreak Hotel. A ball over the top fell to their substitute attacker who touched the ball down and finished low into the goal. 0-1.

Going toe to toe and narrowly missing out against a top side who finished second in the First Division last season is something the guys can be proud of. Bowing out in a prestigious cup is never easy to take but heads can be held high with a performance like that.

All the best to Lochee United as their journey in the cup continues and we wish them well for the rest of the season.

Kirrie Thistle finally have the chance to play back at home this weekend at the Martin Park as they host Lochee United in the Scottish Cup.

Kick off is earlier this week with a 10:00 start, let’s hope we can bring a good squad of spectators down to cheer the guys on.

Kirrie Thistle hosted Kelso in another gruelling battle in the league. The home side still looking for points on the board whereas their opponents already earned their first three against the side we lost 2-0 to last weekend.

The first half proved hard for the hosts as they were up against a well structured side. Two goals were lost inside the opening ten minutes. Both goals coming in from set pieces, two free headers waiting to be finished. 0-2.

More pressure was applied by Kelso as they turned their intensity up a notch. Kirrie made it harder for themselves at times too with the lack of communication shown and an unwilling desire to retrieve any lost balls back.

A third goal came for Kelso. A cross whipped into the box saw the ball land towards their tall number 23’s head who rattled the crossbar first then headed home the second time it fell to him. 0-3.

Despite going three goals down, Kirrie shown a sudden resurgence before the end of the half and brought a goal back. Nice play on the left from Gokalp seen his pass land to Crosby’s feet who turned for goal and his strike initially hitting off the post and trickled into the other corner of the goal. 1-3.

Once getting their first goal, Kirrie found a bit more rhythm and worked themselves well higher up the pitch. A chance came their way from a throw in. Specialist McCathie with his signature long throws, launched one into the box and landed onto the oncoming Harkin who rose highest. 2-3

Half time approached and both teams received their drinks break and talking to. Once finished, Kirrie set back out with the same desire and intensity displayed in the tail end of the first half.

Substitute Mitchell worked hard when coming on, applying pressure to Kelso’s backline. After winning the ball back inside the penalty area, his initial shot is saved by the goalkeeper and Gokalp was there at the right time to finish it off and give Kirrie the equaliser. 3-3.

After finding the goal to bring the scores even, another attack for Kirrie was looking promising until the opponents won the ball back and ran up the other end of the field. An opportunity then landed Kelso’s way and they took it well to find the lead again. 3-4.

With ten on the clock to go, legs were tired and all subs were used. An attack then broke out for the away side. A run up the right from the winger seen his cross whipped in hard, unfortunately landed on the oncoming defender’s head who turned the ball into his own goal and ultimately finish off the match. 3-5.

Another tough defeat to take for Kirrie but still plenty of positives to walk away with. Credit to Kelso for the game and we wish them well for the rest of the season.

Kirrie Ammy’s are back in action tomorrow against opponents Kelso in league competition. The match will be held at Drumgeith and kick off is at 10.30.

🔷🔹 Kirrie Thistle AFC 0-2 Carnoustie Panmure A’s🔹🔷

Kirrie set back out in league action to face opponents Carnoustie at Drumgeith. With both teams having a mixture of different results during pre season, it was hard to tell what was to be expected.

Kirrie started off on the back foot early doors with Carnoustie starting well and taking the game right to them. A few chances came Kirrie’s way during the first half however a string of good saves from the opposing goalkeeper kept the team at bay.

A penalty was given to the visitors when the Kirrie defender claimed to of been fouled inside his own box and grabbed the ball while lying down. The referee thought the tackle was fair play and blew for hand ball. The player stepped up and finished his penalty. 0-1.

Kirrie dusted themselves down and kicked the match off again. With enjoying a little more of the ball, a chance to get further afield came for the home side. Carnoustie however halted the attack and went up the other end of the pitch. A play from up the left seen a cross land into the penalty area and their player finished off. 0-2.

The shape maintained by Carnoustie throughout the first half proved tough for Kirrie having less joy attacking wise. The referee blew for half time and both teams went in for the break.

Half time was over and Kirrie went back out again in the hopes of finding more creativity. The team worked hard throughout the remainder of the game however matched very well by the opponents.

With nothing more concrete to report, the match ended and another tough result to take as the team were narrowly edged out once again by a good opponent. Credit to Carnoustie for how well they played and we wish them the best for the rest of the season.

Kirrie set out once again in league action as they face Carnoustie Panmure’s A team. Last season, these two faced off in the George McArthur Memorial Cup and Kirrie walked away with a 1-0 victory.

Kirrie Thistle hosted Dundee St James in their opening match of the 26/27 DSMFL League campaign. The last time these two teams faced each other was during pre season and the Dundee side ran out a convincing 5-1 win.

Kick off went underway and St James had control of the ball for most of the half. While dictating the play throughout, their goalkeeper also displayed quality kicking that was a struggle for the Kirrie defence to contain at times.

When Kirrie had the ball however they played some nice attacking football themselves and showed great composure at the back also when playing out. A string of chances came their way but both the defence and goalkeeper doing well for the away side.

Kilcoyne and Gokalp had some joy out on the wings with their fullbacks Sinclair and Davie supporting them well. Centre half’s Smith and Soave also solid at the back with hardly being paired together.

With momentum in their stride, Kirrie took the lead moments before the end of the first half. A ball out wide from Soave landed to Kilcoyne, who beat his man well and crossed into the area where striker Mitchell rolled the ball out his feet and struck low into the opposite corner. 1-0.

Half time came and went and the match resumed once again. With their tails up, St James matched Kirrie’s set up man for man and ran out with even more tenacity shown the half before.

With more chances coming their way it wasn’t long before the trailing side would find the equalising goal. A floated ball into the box would see a defensive mixup occur for Kirrie and the opposing striker pounced at the chance to finish into the back of the net. 1-1.

Changes were made for Kirrie to swap the tiring legs about. Harkin, Taylor and Gourlay replaced Crosby, Carr, and Davie.

Despite the fresh legs coming on, the away side took the lead after finding momentum from their first. A free kick was failed to clear and the St James midfielder reacted first and curled his effort well into the top corner. 1-2.

A third goal was added to the away sides tally with ten minutes to go. The ball fell to the player inside the box and even with bodies congesting the area, his strike bypassed everyone and crept into the goal. 1-3.

Kirrie managed to pull a goal back with five minutes to go, Mitchell again doing well to get into the right space and finish past the goalkeeper, sadly our last goal of the tie. 2-3.

The full time whistle went and although they gave their all, it wasn’t to be on the day for Kirrie. Although a massive improvement from the last encounter, there’s always room for more.

Granted the whole team played well, special mentions go to Soave who played a full ninety after coming off the back of a Half Marathon two days before.
