Orkney golf club mens report

The Alfred Flett Ltd Clan Open was played at Orkney golf club last Saturday with an excellent entry of 95 Gents.
The weather was reasonable, although a tricky westerly breeze persisted throughout the day making scoring slightly more difficult.
The course itself was again in excellent condition with the Greenkeeping team coming up trumps again.

The Clan lasses Karen and Charlotte were doing a sterling job relieving everyone of their weekend spending money for what is an excellent charity.

Mike and Kenny were in their normal place for the day behind the barbecue keeping everyone going with superbly cooked burgers.
A big thanks is due to everyone who donated both to the raffle and the barbecue.

Onto the golf and of the early starters only Stewart Fotheringhame showed any decent form with his gross 74 nett 70 leading the way in both sections.
Those scores were however eventually overtaken as the day wore on.

The Cup on offer is a Nett one although there are prizes in both sections, in the Gross section Steven Walls took 3rd place with a 72, but was then overtaken by his peedie brother Scott with a 71 for second spot , however no one got anywhere near the winner Lee Findlay, who's excellent gross 65 included 7 birdies, well played Lee.
In the Nett section scores were proving difficult to come by but eventually we got four players into the 60s.
Fourth place went to Bruce Moar on 69 nett
Colin Harcus was one better on 68 for third,
and Scott Ralph continued his good form with another steady rd of 75 for a nett 67 and second spot.
But topping the lot with his lowest rd of the season a gross 79 for a nett 66 to pick up the silverware was Iain Wilkie who's putting was the difference this time around holing out very well throughout the rd, in his winners speech thanked everyone involved including the main sponsor Marty Flett , and all those involved in making this competition one of the best supported in the Orkney golfing calendar.

At the end of the proceedings Marty announced that the grand total raised on the day was an incredible £5000.
Again thanks to all who entered including many players from all over the north of Scotland and our own clubs .

The previous day had seen an open Stableford sweep played with 34 players entered,
Alan Donaldson was third with 35 points, second was visitor Ronnie Duncan on 36 points and taking first place with an excellent 38 points was Graeme Bell.

A couple of days earlier the Gorns Trophy was played for with another good entry of 43 players , conditions were again not to bad .
Third place and lowest gross with a 67 nett 65 was Liam Smart, second on countback was Eddie Brown also on 65 nett .
But winning the ryder cup style trophy was Keith Nicol with an excellent gross 81 for a nett 64 and a one shot victory.
Well played Keith.

This coming week sees the prestigious Mcvitie and Price cup played for over two rounds on Wednesday and Saturday.

On Friday night The Glass Shop sponsors an open Texas Scramble. This is a shotgun start at 6pm for teams of three or four. Following the comp the Scotland v Morrocco World Cup game will be live in the clubhouse.

The following week sees the club championship played for over 4 rounds on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

So plenty of golf to be played over the next couple of weeks good luck everyone.

Orkney golf club mens report

Orkney golf club played host to the second major of the Orkney golfing calendar on Saturday past when the 36 hole Orkney Stroke Play Championship was contested. The Hamilton and Pit Stop cups up for grabs in the Gross and Nett sections respectively. The gross winner also receiving a silver medal courtesy of Scottish golf North.

The weather was reasonable throughout the day with a stiff South Easterly breeze in the morning that picked up a bit by the end of the day .

The course was presented immaculately by Chris and the Greenkeeping staff who have worked tirelessly to get it into the condition its presently in, despite the cold and wet start to the season .

The club would like to thank Garry Colthered from the Pit Stop Garage for his continued support in sponsoring the competition, such support is much appreciated by everyone taking part .

Thanks also to Ali Flett and Williamsons butchers for the catering, and the ladies for serving it up. The Roast Beef and Trifle was much appreciated by all .

Onto the golf and an entry of 69 players contested the tournament.
In the first round nett section eight player's shot under par scores of 68 or better with James McConnachie leading the way on 65 closely followed by Wayne Small on 66 and several players including David Miller and Callum Lycett 67 and Chris Rae and Andy kemp on 68s all in contention.
In the battle for the Hamilton Cup it was also pretty tight with only five shots separating the top 9 players, Callum Lycett and Barry Reeve were perhaps the surprise packages on 73 and 72 but all the usual suspects were loitering close at hand including Lee Findlay, Steven Walls and Steven Rendall,
But it was last year's Kirkwall Open champion Liam Smart who held the halfway lead with an impressive level par round of 69.

With everyone fed and watered the second round got underway with the wind increasing to make scoring trickier.
Unfortunately for Liam a lingering shoulder injury saw him have to withdraw after only hitting his tee shot on the first , this was incredibly unfortunate for Liam but hopefully a speedy recovery will see him back amongst the leaders again.

Wilson cup player Steven Walls carded the lowest round of the day with a 2 under par 67 which included 4 birdies, but it was Steven Rendall's 4 birdies for a second round 68 gross that proved decisive on the day, his total of 138 was enough for a two shot victory. This saw him retain the cup and indeed win it for the 15th time, an incredible achievement. It was Steven Walls who finished second on 140, rounding out the top 7 for the prizes were Lee Findlay 142, Brian Corsie 148, Ewan Rendall 149, Kieran Simants 149 , and Graham Flett also 149 with all three places separated on countback.

The race for the Pit Stop cup in the nett section was equally close with only 2 shots between the top 4 .
It was head greenkeeper Chris Rae who came out on top with a second successive nett 68 for a two round total of 136 for a one shot victory over Andy kemp who's second round nett 69 saw him with a total of 137 to edge Andrew Hamilton and Wayne Small into third and fourth respectively both with 138 totals .
Hugh Clyde was fifth on 139, Callum Lycett and and Ewan Tait rounded of the top 7 places with 140 and 141 totals .
Congratulations to Chris on the win ,
It was also Chris who took the prize for nearest the pin on the 18th in the +2 to 10 category while Hugh Clyde was nearest in the 11 plus section

Once again a big thank you to anyone who helped in any way to make the competition run so smoothly, it really is much appreciated.

The previous Wednesday saw 52 players taking part in the Glass Shop June medal .
The weather was reasonable for most of the day but some of the later starters got some heavy drizzle.
In the first division 3rd place went to Malcolm Smart on 66 which was also the same score as the top two with countback pushing Willie Marwick into second spot with Graham Bell winning the medal also on nett 66 .
Bob Adamson was third in the second division on nett 68 with second place Keith Nicol and first Jim Brown also separated on countback after carding nett 67s .
Well done all and again thanks to Gary and Trevor at the Glass Shop for their continued support.

This week sees the Gorns Trophy played on Wednesday, with an open stableford sweep on Friday as a precursor for the Alfred Flett Ltd Clan Open on Saturday.

This is one of the biggest open competitions of the season and a good turnout is hoped for as money raised on the day goes to Clan Cancer support Orkney.
