KIRKHAM A.B.C A name that carries History, Champion’s and an ever lasting legacy. Originally located in the old Sam Betts gym in the 1990’s early 2000’s now called ‘Kirkham box’ ironically. The boxing gym moved to where most people knew it as ‘2AM’ in 2002(ish). There coaches Frank Ellis, Eric Metcalf & Steve Davis tirelessly volunteered many hours teaching the skill and bulletproof mindset of high level boxing creating many national champions and elite boxers including our very own Coaches Adam Little, Cameron Singer & Tyrone Bowen Price to name a few. The club was built on community, success and hard work with a do or die approach to training and competing - which ultimately made us become winners. Fast forward 20 years and now the young boxers of yesterday are the coaches of today, re-igniting the flame of amateur boxing in Kirkham. We have had our first representative of KIRKHAM A.B.C 12 year old Joey Dunn who embodies the Kirkham attitude and discipline it takes to be a champion. Here’s to many more to come from the new age KIRKHAM A.B.C!

Another solid week ticked off at A.L Combat Gym.

We welcomed the team from in for some quality rounds — proper learning sparring and exactly the kind of work that pushes everyone up a level. Midweek we got a little ‘Hollywood’ as BBC News came down to interview some of our young fighters about their upcoming competitions and how the gym’s helping shape them both in and out of boxing… safe to say a few lads are adjusting well to their new celeb status already 🎥😂 Great experience for them though — cameras, interviews and pressure are all part of the journey nowadays.

We rounded the week off with a trip to for more intense rounds ahead of upcoming bouts, finishing by watching professionals and go to work over 6 hard rounds — a priceless lesson seeing high-level boxing up close.

Different environments, different challenges, constant progression. That’s how we do things here. Always learning, always testing, always moving forward. Proud of every single person putting the work in this week. Great to see everyone improving week in, week out 🙌🏼👊🏼.

Using your range is a huge part of boxing. Too many fighters underutilise the length of their arms by bending at the elbow, leaning in and putting their head closer to the opponent - usually leading to them getting hit! A strong stance, standing side on and extending your arm fully is crucial to getting the most out of your range. Here Coach Adam gets Cam to throw long punches at range, resulting in his opponent having to reach in with their jab. Cam counters the opponent as they fall in behind their jab with a well timed back hand, still being switched on enough to see something come back and again coming through with his own solid right hand to finish off the opponent - A basic but effective way of using your range 🎯

The Jab is instrumental in most situations in boxing whether it be attacking, defending, range finding or setting shots up. Here our development coach Amalie is getting Will to judge the distance with the jab and follows through with a combination straight after. His jab allows him to know how close to his opponent he is, whether he needs to step in more and also create momentum to throw multiple punches straight after with speed & power.

You can’t just throw a left hook to the body and expect it to land - put some shots in before to set it up. Here Coach Tyrone sets up the left hook to the body with a 1-2 left hook to the head, these are more of a throwaway (don’t need to land) all they do is bring the opponents guard high to create more space to get the left hook to the body off. The throw away shots will occupy the opponent to the head, leaving a big enough gap to get some real momentum into the body shot.

Punching through the target is a crucial part of boxing. Not on every shot, but the shots you want to make count. You can use a variety of different speeds, power & tempo to create the right time & space to deliver that knockout shot. Coach Cam runs through some techniques and build ups to finishing combinations with power. It’s rare single power shots land without the proper set ups. Set the shot up, power through the feet, rotate the hips and punch through the target 🎯🧠
