One of my Clients and good friends has recently dislocated his shoulder for the second time and after 2 weeks of recovering in a sling - he had booked in with myself to get started on the process of returning back to sport via Rehab and Massaging!
Shoulder dislocations represent 50% of all major joint dislocations. It is the most common injury in contact sports such as football (which he had done this injury in!) Or Rugby. A dislocation being able to happen in any direction, the most common direction for dislocation is being forward or anteriorly.
After brief period of initial testing of Range of movement and Muscle strength, Steven passed phase one (basic recovery) and we will be focusing on phase two for next 2 to 4 weeks - increasing range of movement, muscle strength and muscle balance within the shoulder.
One of the practical ways of helping Steven to heal is by Massage as this helps the tight compensatory muscles surrounding the shoulder. Often, the neck and upper back muscles are the most affected. ART (Active Release Therapy), trigger point therapy and deep tissue massage with percussion therapy can loosen these areas and allow for the shoulder to regain correct muscle balance and increase Range of movement!
After the massage there was some static strengthening exercises and some mobility exercises explained and shown to Steven which helps increase Range of movement/Muscle strength over 2-4 week period (sets, reps and cant forget about rest time)
