Why do we sigh?

We all do it. Sometimes without even noticing. More than something that is done in moments of frustration, a sign activates and heals the nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve.

A big deep sigh reinflates tiny air sacs in the lungs that can become under-inflated during normal breathing, helping to keep the lungs working efficiently.

Sighing brings in more oxygen. It tells your body you are safe, it is your rest button, triggering the parasympathetic nervous system; our relax and repair mode.

There is also an interesting breathing practice based on the physiology of a sigh.

Try this:

- Take a normal breath in through your nose.
- Then take a second, smaller breath in.
- Follow it with a long, slow exhale through the mouth.
- Repeat for a few minutes, without forcing the breath.

This is known as a physiological sigh.

Sometimes your body is simply adjusting your breathing.

How's your summer going? The heat's been pretty intense, but the studio fans have been keeping it beautifully cool, and remember, "If you can train yourself to handle the heat on the mat, you can handle whatever 'heat' life throws at you off the mat."

Whether you've been able to get to class much over the last 4 weeks or not, there's still another 3 weeks of holiday sessions to enjoy at the studio, so do book into your regular class - or try out something completely new - before the end of the month?

The Autumn Term starts on Monday 7th September and all classes are now on the calendar and ready to book!

Top up your £9 or £10 class credits if you plan to come regularly (click memberships here: https://www.stableyoga.co.uk/online-booking, or find Stable Yoga in the Glofox app) and we look forward to seeing you on the mat!

Sometimes one type of exercise isn’t enough.

Combining two or more types of exercise creates a selection of movement and builds a more rounded strength in your body. Combining yoga and running helps hip mobility and releases calves, whereas yoga and cycling counteracts rounded shoulders and tight hip flexors. Running is excellent for cardiovascular health, bone density and endurance, but it also places repetitive load through the calves, hip flexors and hamstrings. Over time, these muscles can become less mobile, while the glutes, core and upper back may benefit from more targeted strength and movement.

The same is true for cycling, swimming, strength training, tennis—or simply spending long hours at a desk. Every activity asks something different of the body, and yoga helps bring it back into balance.

Muscles often become tight because they’re working hard in the same repeated movements or compensate for weakness elsewhere. Offering a wider selection of movements through varied exercise creates both strength and flexibility.

Yoga helps restore your range of motion, improves joint mobility, strengthens the smaller stabilising muscles that support good movement.

See you on the mat!

Last call for Saturday's Sound Journey!

Why Hip Openers Feel Different For Everyone….

Different bodies and different genders will react in different ways to each pose.

Hip mobility is influenced by both anatomy and lifestyle.

Women generally have a wider pelvis and different hip socket angle, which can allow greater range of motion in certain movements. Men often have deeper hip sockets and more muscle mass around the hips and legs, which can create more restriction in poses like Pigeon or Butterfly.

But flexibility isn’t just about muscles. The nervous system also determines how much movement the body allows. If a stretch feels unsafe or too forceful, muscles contract to protect the joint.

This is why slower, supported hip openers are often more effective than pushing deeper. Steady breathing and time help reduce muscular guarding and improve mobility gradually. Slow breaths signal to your nervous system that you are safe, a longer exhale encourages this also.

We have a huge treat in store on Saturday 23rd May from 6-8pm. 🧡

Niki Moss Simpson and Perin Kureyhan-Cummings will be back in the studio for The Resilience Reset: a restorative workshop blending gentle yoga and breathwork, tuning fork sound therapy, and Reiki chakra energy healing — all designed to help you return to the balanced “factory settings” your body was born with.

In our modern world, stressors of all kinds can disrupt our inner harmony. This session helps clear your central energy channel, strengthen your energetic boundaries, and support the free flow of Qi/prana/life force throughout your system.

Using the body’s innate ability to self-tune through sound, combined with mindful movement and healing touch, you’ll create space for calm, clarity, and deep energetic alignment. Leave feeling grounded, balanced, and more resilient from the inside out.

Popular visiting therapists at Stable Yoga, Perin is a Kinesiologist & PSYCHE-K Practitioner, and Niki is a yoga & somatic breathwork facilitator & Reiki/Chakra healer.

To book your slot, go to https://www.stableyoga.co.uk/online-booking and click on Courses in the grey calendar box, or find Stable Yoga in your Glofox app. £33 per person for this 2-hour self-care session.

We have a special event on Saturday 23rd May with Perin and Niki, 6pm until 8.
Saturday’s Resilience Reset workshop brings together a combination of Reiki, tuning fork, breath work and yoga; designed to support you back to yourself.

Led by Perin Kureyhan-Cummings and Niki Moss Simpson, this is a space to pause, reset, and return to a steadier baseline.
A chance to step out of the usual pace, and give the body time to restore itself.

Through gentle yoga and breathwork, the body is encouraged to slow down and release held tension. Tuning fork sound therapy introduces subtle vibration, which can help the nervous system settle and support the body’s natural capacity to recalibrate. Reiki offers a quiet, restorative space for further release and rebalancing.

Together, these approaches work to support circulation, breathing patterns, and nervous system regulation — creating the conditions for the body to move out of “doing” mode and back towards a more settled, responsive state.

The session is designed to be accessible, supportive, and deeply restorative.

We look forward to welcoming you for this restoring session. Book online or follow the ‘courses’ tab on Glo Fox app (search for Stable Yoga)

On March 14th we have the return of our Soulful Saturday a deeply restful gathering designed to help you step out of ‘doing mode’ and into being. This session blends gentle movement, conscious breath, Yoga Nidra, and sound healing to support nervous system regulation and deep restoration.

The evening (6-8pm) begins with grounding breathwork and soulful movement to gently release tension and prepare the body for rest. Niki, Hatha yoga teacher and somatic breathwork facilitator, will guide you into a spacious and supportive Yoga Nidra — offering the body and mind a chance to truly let go.

From here, we transition into a Sound Journey led by Mia, whose intuitive use of gongs, Himalayan bowls, percussion, and her crystal harp creates a rich, immersive soundscape.

Sound has a powerful way of settling the nervous system, clearing energetic blocks, and supporting integration — leaving you feeling both grounded and gently uplifted.

There will also be a nourishing snack and drink, to welcome you back to your weekend.

We hope you’ll leave feeling rested, restored, and resourced for the week ahead.

Book online (link in bio, then click on courses) or via the free Glofox app: search for Stable Yoga and click on ‘Courses’
