A brilliant day out with Ryan Ross and chums.. We did initially intend on the CMD Arete, but myself and Mark Warner were a bit spooked about 70mph gusts, so we agreed on an ascent of The Ben via the Pony Track, with some winter skills thrown in :)
It was a wise decision , proper mental on the plateau when we were there!!!

Looking forward ti meeting them again next winter :)
Thank to Mark for working with me today:)

An excellent weekend out on the winter skills and wild camping weekend.
I knew all 4 from previous trips, so this was a refresher for 3 of them, and a brand new experience for one.
Because of the exceptional weather yesterday, we had a long day, covering all the movement skills, ainming to summit the munro for sunset, and descending to the tents in failing light.
The forecast said it was going to snow overnight, with a period of strong gusts, so our pitch was well prepared.. During the storm, 9ne elastic broke and one peg disappeared, that was all.

A very excellent time out working with Alex Nail on a landscape photography and winter skills course.
We team up with him every February for a week, so when the light is good for photos we do that, and when its not, we got and learn how to use axe and crampons, planning a route and navigate the winter mountains.
So far, we've had a day on The Wee Buachaille, views across Aonach Eagach, and a trip into Robbers Falls in Glen Nevis..
Tomorrow, we're in the Mamores. Watch this space :)

Winter skills and wild camping weekend.
These 4 folks are now quite solid mountain navigators, can stop a slide on steep snow, and understand what an axe and crampons can do. They also understand what they are comfortable to achieve safely. They have a long and happy winter walking hobby to look forward too :).
The winter camping is also a nice add on, its good to experience how to stay comfortable all the time... in fact, one was soo comfortable, there quite a bit snoring:)
We have 2 more of the courses lined up for this season.

A wonderful weekend on the winter skills and wild camp weekend. Just me and Rob this time...
As he was on his own, we made up routes suitable for us both, covering all the winter skills drills as we went. Plus we summited Meal Dearg ( Aonach Eagach) for sunset. Unfortunately, it just went dark... so we tried for sunrise, this time it just went light!!!
An excellent weekend with a cozy night camping away for it all :)
If you'd like to join us next time, look here:)
Still places available on 14/15th February and in March

Day 2 winter skills.. the thaw was properly setting in, so this morning we got our heads together to make the mountaineering decision on what to do!!! Initially is was a circuit of a Corbett, but the fight getting off the hill would mean we wouldn't really get much learning in, so to help jack along his "ML journey", we got some pretty hardcore navigation in instead.
Relocation, the 4 Ds, following linear features like contours, back bearings, timing and pacing.
Very accurate navigation throughout the day, building not only his ( and Victoria's) ability, but also gaining the confidence to believe yourself, which is 50% of good navigation:)
Thank you both for making this an excellent weekend

Day 1, Winter Skills with Jack and Victoria.
Soo much snow!!! We spent the day on Buachaille Etive Beag getting their heads around all the aspects of safe winter mountain travel. There was a big emphasis on winterising navigation, with lots and lots of relocation and timings.. it was pretty bang on :)

CRAMPON ON SMALL BOOTS DEMO!
As someone in a group i help with ( UK Hiking) posted about crampon recommendations, I thought it might be good idea to highlight the differences between 3 types of grivel crampons ( most common in theUK market), and suitability of use in the UK, particularly with small sized boots!!
I hope this is of some use to someone buying their first pair of crampons..
It does not cover fitting, strapping systems or compatible boots, its more to show the difference in point configurations on small boots.
The G10 is a good all round crampon, for walking and easy mountaineering in the UK.Fits UK size 3 to 12 ( with long bars)
The G12 ice a traditional 12 point snow and ice climbing crampon. Fits UK size 8 to 14 ( with long bars).
The Air tech is great for UK use, walking, easy and alpine mountaineering, and a great all rounder for stability on a wide variety of ground. Fits UK size 3 to 12.
I love these and I'm on my fourth or fifth pair.
