Over 40 and training more but getting slower? Here’s why 👇

Your metabolism has changed. Your recovery is slower. I see a number of cyclists make this mistake:
They try to train like they did in their 30s.

More volume
Same intensity
Same nutrition

The result?

Plateaus. Fatigue. Frustration.

Here’s what ACTUALLY works after 40:

âś… Smarter intensity - Less junk miles, more focused intervals that create adaptation without destroying recovery.

✅ Adequate recovery - Those “easy” days need to be ACTUALLY easy. Zone 2 or lower.

✅ Strategic nutrition - Your protein needs are higher. Carb timing matters more. You can’t out-train poor fuelling.

This is the Njinga 360 Performance Code: TRAIN | FUEL | MIND

Built specifically for riders over 40.

The results? Average 23W FTP increase in 8 weeks.

Riders hitting PBs in their 50s, 60s, even 70s.

Not by training more. By training RIGHT for your age and with a proven structure.

Book a free coach call and I will review your training and give you some quick suggestions on how to improve it.

I’ve coached 1,000+ cyclists. Here’s why most training plans fail 👇

1. They don’t adapt when life happens
2. There’s no accountability to keep you consistent
3. They ignore nutrition and mental resilience

At Njinga, we fix all three:

1. Real-time plan adjustments around YOUR life
2. Coach check-ins, WhatsApp support, community accountability
3. Our 360° Performance code: focusing on TRAIN | FUEL | MIND

We don’t just give you training sessions. We give you a complete coaching system.

That’s why 92% of our riders over 40 gain 16-78 watts in 8 weeks.
Some hit lifetime PBs in their 50s, 60s, even 70 all with as little as 2-3 hours training a week!

This isn’t magic.

It’s structure, support, and science.

Book a free performance audit call and I’ll analyse your current training and show you exactly what needs to change.

Still chasing the numbers you hit 10 years ago?

Things change physiologically and so should your training.

I’ve shared the key shifts I coach specifically for over‑40 riders in my latest blog.

Learn how to balance intensity, strength and rest so you can ride harder AND feel better.

Remembering, gains happen in recovery, not just on the turbo.

Learn the key things you need to fix to start seeing progress again if you’re over 40.

TRAINING TIP:

- 10 minute warm up.
- 90 seconds at 110% FTP.
- rest for 2 minutes zones 1 -2 between each interval.
- 4–6 reps.
- 5 minutes cool down.

Perfect for riders short on time who want to boost sustained power without overtraining.

This is the kind of structure we use inside Njinga coaching, making sure every interval counts.

Train smart and build real power.

Save this and try it on your next turbo session.

What would you attempt if age wasn’t holding you back?

Monie walked into our world at 59, a complete cycling newbie who couldn’t even clip into her pedals. A friend had talked her into riding London to Paris, and she’d Googled “cycling coach” in a mild panic.

Enter us and the rest of the Njinga Community.

That was 12 years ago.

For Monie, it’s never been about proving anything to anyone. It’s about setting ambitious goals that excite her, the pure enjoyment of being on the bike, the satisfaction of achievement and most importantly, longevity. She’s building a life where she can keep riding, keep exploring, keep challenging herself for decades to come.

She has rewritten every assumption about what’s possible in your 60s and 70s. She has:

-Climbed Ventoux twice in one day at 65 (that’s 3,200m of elevation)
-Completed Mallorca’s 167km, 2,500m route 3 times (Became the oldest woman to do it in 2024)
-Completed Giro d’Sardegna 6 Day Stage Race 353km & 4460m in Sardinia.
Completed The Rhodes Challenge Series 110km & 2,000m, summiting Mt Profitis Ilias
Qualified for UCI Gran Fondo World Champs twice in her age group to represent Team USA through the Tour of Cambridgeshire
-Conquered: RideLondon 100 (twice), Rocacorba climb (Spain); Kotor Serpentine (Montenegro) and multi-day rides through Tuscany, and of course that original London to Paris 350km challenge that started it all.

At 73, she’s not slowing down, and as an Elevate client we will be helping her take on Etape Caledonia later this year.

Monie didn’t have some secret athletic background. She just decided that “too old” wasn’t going to be in her vocabulary. She shows our entire Njinga community, daily that the stories we tell ourselves about age are just that, stories.

So what would YOU do if you stopped letting age be the answer?

Whether you’re 45 or 75, whether you’ve never clipped in or haven’t cycled in decades, see what’s possible when you have the right support behind you.

Drop us a message. Let’s find out what you’re capable of.

“Zone 2 feels too easy to make a difference.”

Wrong.

It’s the hidden secret behind every strong cyclist’s fitness. While you’re grinding yourself into the ground with intervals, smart riders are spending winter riding… comfortably.

Think of Zone 2 as upgrading from a diesel engine to a supercharged hybrid.

More mitochondria = Better energy production = You ride longer, climb stronger, recover faster.

Discover why slowing down is the fastest way to get faster, and learn how to actually do Zone 2 properly (spoiler: most cyclists get it wrong) 👇
