Running................

You either love it or hate it. For many years I have not been a fan of running. But if you are injury free it is one of the most effective ways of getting fit.

As I said yesterday, I decided to use the time during lockdown to push myself mentally. So, I took up running. I must be honest I was never a natural endurance runner ( will probably tell you it was hard work getting me to run as 16 year old) and even in the military I wasn’t great at it and have always preferred strength and sprinting based activities.

So back in May I started doing intervals around the Cricket pitch, and for the first few weeks I thought this is ***T. A few weeks later I started to add some more distance after the intervals.

May went by and I had clocked up 42km, continued into June where I started to find more of a rhythm and I managed 74km, then July was here and I clocked up 99km, August came and I tailed off a bit and only managed 61km. So far September has been poor.

Although I haven’t done much this month, I have started to include more strength work again, steady state cardio on the bike in the evenings and I know I can put my trainers on and run 10km comfortably.

If you are new to running or getting back into it, just keep chipping away and it will soon get easier. I am still a slow runner and will certainly not be breaking any records anytime soon. But it has allowed me to get outside and enjoy my local surroundings.

making the 40kg slam ball look easy.

Glad to have John back in the gym as he always works hard. Showing that age is just a number, being 61 and smashing through his session.

This feels distinctly heavier than pre lockdown.

Although lockdown has allowed me to work on some of my weaker areas such as endurance and running.

What have you improved during lockdown?

WE ARE BACK OPEN.

It has been some time since we were last in touch given the Covid-19 situation and the closure of all gyms. I know the closure was a disappointment for many. If anything good has come out of this, hopefully it’s a renewed focus on health and wellbeing. However, I know some of you are still feeling anxious about the situation.

Are you worried about your health in light of Covid-19?

As we have celebrated 75 years since it left me thinking about those that have served and sacrificed. I can’t imagine the environments those servicemen and women served and lived through. And those that didn’t make the journey home I thank you.

15 years ago I went to Iraq at the young age of 19, it would turn out to be a tour that would change my life. Thanks to the military I have ended up probably drinking far too much when going for a quiet social drink and never learning from the hangover, speaking my mind at the wrong time and not fitting into corporate environments, but I’m proud to have played my part and served.

For those that have served, those that are serving and those that have sacrificed, thank you.

I would like to thank the people that I served with and those that are still serving , , , , , and many more that aren’t on here. Also who first influenced my military career.

Good work from keeping his powerlifting training up during isolation, using one of our racks that we had in storage.
