Today we travelled to Longcroft School to take on AFC Tickton Thunder.
As the game kicked off you could see Thunder were up for this game and took an early lead making it 1-0.
We responded quickly with Ollie playing in Harrison C to level the scores a minute later.
We struggled to get going and get into the game and Tickton kept the pressure up, scoring with a long range effort in the 9th minute.
We managed to respond in the 15th when Mollie slid in Harrison C to equalised 2-2!
We hoped this would help us kick on, but our passes were missing and we were second to every ball. Then Thunder scored another long range effort in the 25th minute to make it 3-2 and we set off the self destruct button, conceding 3 more over the next 5 minutes and headed into the half time break 6-2 down!
Tickton completely deserved their lead at half time and had out worked us in every area of the pitch.
There were some stern words said at half time and the full team acknowledged they hadn’t been working how they should. We knew we could salvage the game if they woke up and kicked on.
We encouraged them to outwork their opponents, the long grass didn’t allow for dribbling and fancy footwork in tight spaces like we kept trying to do, we had to move the ball faster, find our passes and get moving into space.
They went back out with new motivation and a clear message of what was needed.
From the start of the second half you could see we had woke up, the movement was better, we’d closed the gaps we had been leaving, and we were moving the ball a lot better.
5 minutes into the half some good play on the right released Frankie, who rifled in a shot from the edge of the area to make it 6-3!
Tickton tried to respond but we defended a lot better, moving the ball forward and putting pressure on the Tickton defence. It took another 10 minutes, then Harrison B drove the ball forward before releasing Frankie, who made no mistakes to make it 6-4! Could the comeback be on!?
In the 55th minute Fin fed in Harrison B on the edge of the box who skipped past a defender and fired into the bottom corner! 6-5!
You could feel the belief in the team now as we worked for every ball and attacked with purpose! The equaliser only took another 3 minutes as Ollie tapped the ball back to Harrison C who showed brilliant footwork to create an opening, scoring his hat trick and making it 6-6 in the 58th minute!
We knew we had Tickton on the ropes, but they hadn’t given up yet and kept trying to attack, forcing a save off Jacob and firing close a couple of times in the closing stages!
Mason thought he had the winner in the 65th minute with the goal in front of him, but a horrific bobble took the ball away from him as he shot and it went over! As gutted as he was, his head didn’t drop as he worked hard to create for his teammates.
Then in the dying seconds Henry pumped a long ball down the right, the defender misjudged the flight of the ball and Frankie pounced onto it, driving down the right and into the box, hitting her shot hard and low into the bottom corner, completing her hat trick and our come back to make it 6-7!
Full Time
AFC Tickton Thunder 6-7 Longhill Ravens Reds
This was definitely the definition of a game of 2 halves.
Thunder had deserved their lead at half time after a brilliant first half performance.
Luckily we managed to come back into it in the second half and just had enough, with the winner coming less than a minute before the end of the game!
Thank you to AFC Tickton Thunder for a cracking game, and good luck for the rest of your season!
