The Reason:
Why do you want to lose weight? Burn body fat? Build muscle? Get fitter? Stronger? Healthier? When it really comes to it?
Being honest with the real reasons can help keep you motivated and give direction to your training and nutrition.
My reasons have changed over the years. When I was at school, I was overweight. I was the ‘big one’ of my friends. I really struggled with confidence as a young teenager and took to drastic measures such as skipping meals, sometimes full days to lose weight. I ended up losing a lot of weight and looking fairly ill. I still wasn’t happy with the way I looked. I had gone from one extreme to the other. I now was very thin with very little strength. my confidence was still extremely low.
Going to the gym really boosted my confidence as I could build strength and muscle, manage my body fat, keep lean and healthy. Health became really important to me. My family history of medical conditions doesn’t fill me with the most confidence. I got more interested in nutrition when I qualified as a personal trainer as I learnt more about the benefits of natural, unprocessed food and the dangers of saturated fats, processed food and hidden preservatives and salt. Whilst I believe there needs to be balance and a realness to meals. I also want to be healthy and reduce the risk of medical conditions.
In the past 5 years, my reasons have changed. When William was born, my goals went from getting shredded to being more functionally fit and sustainably healthy. Having children is the best! I am lucky to have 2 amazing children that are full of energy. My priorities changed to be stronger for day to day looking after the kids, fitter to chase after them and flexible enough to squat down and pick them up, join in the soft play games, hide in dens and more. I also want to be a positive role model for them to stay active.
My goals and reasons are what have kept me on track and focused.
What are your reasons? When you really think about it? Why do you want to change body shape? Or be healthier?
